Engine & Brake warning messages

When my wife started the car (D3 V6 SE '08) tonight she received a few error messages, it said:

"Engine Failure, limited gears available."

and then something like:

"Auto Handbrake release not available."

The car felt sluggish to drive...

Does anyone have further insight into these errors? I think I'll ring my dealer tomorrow..

Sounds like a failure to communate. Probably a loose connection or software fault.
