20" Stormers on 255 / 50 / 20 (109)

I have had my stormers on 255/50/20's for almost 12 months now without a problem.....

Shocked

About a week ago the car developed a slight shimmy at 50mph.....a kind man known only as TFC serviced it on Thursday and had some observations on the tyres....maybe too thin at 255 ?? also a well known supporter of 20" wheels mentioned 255 as maybe to thin....

question is if I swap these out for 275 or 295 will the shimmy go, OR should I go back to a 19" set up.

I have had the tyres balanced correctly, 4 wheel alignment shows no problems....

Al Cope - - feel free to comment Whistle

Thanks in advance,

Nick

PS - I am off to france in a couple of weeks and need this sorted.

Couple of points (well three actually!) that might help send this thread in the direction you are looking Thumbs Up

1. What sort of mileage have you done on them?

2. Is the wear even across the tread?

3. How much tread is left?

Mileage = 19k done on tyres

Even wear = no, not before new tyres and balance / alignment

Tread Left = 7-9mm at a rough estimate

I want to keep the stormers tbh....but any advice appreciated !

well....... comment I will Whistle

After running 275's, then 295's I settled on 265/50's Yokos. To be honest, the 275's were cheap nexens, and ride was rubbish. 295's were Grabber UHP's, and whilst looking the Dogs dodahs, I found they tramlined too much (and for any of those used to the A34 down past Oxford, you'll know what I mean), So I was looking for something with decent width and sidewall, so went for the Yokohama Advan ST's. Everybody said they be a soft tyre, so plenty of grip but poor wear rate, but I've done 13k miles now, with still 6mm left, from 8mm start, so that's OK in my book.

I've got no shimmy or wobble.

On the subject of balancing, it took three different places to get my 295's balanced, including a well known place so called used to handling big wheels - they still got it wrong. If it wasnt wobbling before, whats changed? have you lost any wheel weights?

tried swopping fronts to back?

Any wear in the steering rack?

Al

PS - if 255 is too thin for 9.5" rims, why do LR fit 255/50x19's to the RRS rims, which are 9.5" wide?

OK, Ken, stand corrected about 1/2" on RRS wheels - I thought D3 19's were 8" wide, not 8.5" Thumbs Up

Thanks for all advice here gents. I had my car into a really good place today, used to dealing with RRS, BMW and other large fitment alloys. Two step balance;

1 - changed front to rear
2 - re balanced all wheels
£50 and they gave me a report...

And mine was the poor relative in the tyre bays.....

Anyway, all sorted Thumbs Up
