Turbo on 2004 D3

Hi
Anyone had experience of driving a D3 without the turbo working. Spoke to LR Dealer that inspected car and they advised it was ok to drive pending the replacement it would just be underpowered. As it is a 2004 Turbo it requires a complete replacement, after, this the design was changed so 'parts' could be replaced.
Called twice to confirm it would be ok an both times they said yes.
Need to drive about 250 miles on the motorway any views Bow down .
Thank you

Won't a non-functioning turbo result in an Engine System Fault limiting you to 20mph or so?

I wouldn't

I had my turbo go, now two years ago after only 3 weeks of ownership Crying or Very sad . LR Assist attended and told me it was OK to drive and as I was at the side of the road at the time with two babies on board decided on the 20 mile trip to LR Yeovil, only to get within 2 miles and one of the oil seals went, caused alot more damage and then 12 weeks without the car while having "discussions" with warrenty company and LR Assist over who was paying for the additional work.

250 miles seems quite alot to me without Turbo.

Seized. needs a complete turbo unit not just an actuator or anything.

What damage did you have.

Again called LR due to concerns but again their answer was 'it will be fine just very down on power and will struggle up to 50ish' but no reason to worry, clearly not your experience.

Thank you, just mailed them.

I understand it is the entire unit and very tricky, not sure if this one is a body off.

Are you really going to a dealer?!!

Try West 4x4:-

http://www.west4x4.co.uk/

As for turbos there are a number of, IMHO, better sources of supply than LR, for instance:-

Search the forum for others, and get quotes for the work; if the body is coming off there are other jobs which it may be beneficial to do at the same time, depending on mileage & age.

I had loss of power and high pitched noise. Stopped safety after only 1/2 mile and phoned Land Rover Assistance, after they attened was told it was the usual hole in the intercooler pipe (he didn't mention the turbo itself at the time) and that like as have been suggested was told I could drive it without much power, so I limped it to the Dealer.

Remember I had only had the car 3 weeks, so didn't know any better at the time or what to be asking about.

At LR Yeovil they told me in no uncertian terms that I should not have driven it in that state, more than just the intercooler hose by the time LR Yeovil lloked under the bonnet.

I don't actaully know what the final problem was but by the end of the whoel experience I needed a new turbo, new pipe work and Cat (I dumped 3 litres of oil into the exhaust in the drive to Yeovil).

The real issue came with the (third party) warrently company firstly refusing to pay up to fix it as I had driven the car damaged, it took over 12 weeks to get them to pay out and only as I had it in writing from the LR Assist call out guy stating that I was ok to drive those 20 miles.

Got Dealer price to with £125.00 of an independent.

I tend to now agree, so many differing points of view from phoning around but given Disco N's comments I think best to not drive.

Thank you Thumbs Up

If the body is coming off & you haven't done the 105k / 7 year service then of course that should be brought forward.

Whilst the body is off:-

Check EGRs & turbo & turbo pipes

Check High Pressure Fuel Pump

In addition to all belts (front & rear) replace both idler pulleys, bolts & tensioner & bolts.

Consider replacing water pump - flush & replace coolant.

Consider replacing oil pump assembly & bolts - new plate for 07 onwards is
LR013487 £47.04 forum price - 3 hours extra labour when doing all belts etc...

Replace rear brake lines

Check anti-roll bar bushes

Check cross-over pipe at rear of the engine

Wash chassis & underside of body, reapply Waxoil where necessary.

Ask for the old parts from the cam belt change, especially the rear tensioner pulley & check that they are using LR parts.
