Just wondering what those two big cast iorn pieces are that are just behind the back bumper , Im sure this has been asked in the past and ive tried to find them but failed ,they look like the are on a hinge maybe to do with the air suspension?

They are harmonic dampers... to reduce vibrations and such through the chassis.
Popular on many vehicles but tend not to be quite to big as those on the D3.
And yes... been asked before  Use a search to seek out more infos and debate.

Harmonic dampers, they are the only components on a D3 that dont give trouble 
I guess that is because there is no computor involved 
The only thing that can happen is mud can build up around them which needs to be cleaned. All be it that here in OZ we have had drought for the last seven years and D3s here only 3 or so years old we havent had to do much cleaning of mud off them 
Oh for lots of mud  Havent had the D3 boged yet, but it will bucket down rain one day
