Cracked rear upper arm
Firstly thank you for the wealth of information on here, it makes fault finding much easier! But I think I have found a new one, or at least I couldn't find anything similar when I was searching.
While under the car trying to check wiring for a HDC fault I noticed this (baring in mind the car had an MOT just over 3 months ago and apparently no one noticed).

Has anyone else heard of a crack developing in the upper rear arms? Is it likely to be from corrosion or started by some kind of impact?
From the look of it there is no way it has only recently appeared.

It's caused by corrosion. I just swapped out all 4 rear arms, torsion rods etc and both upper arms were bad in the same area as yours.Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue

Thanks, I guess it being a corrosion issue is slightly less concerning than some kind of terrible accident before we owned the car.
Were the ones you replaced as far gone as this one? I'm not sure I should even drive the car to school in the morning. A new one is on the way, but it won't be here until the end of the week.

I would definitely recommend that it not be driven, that’s highly likely to fail catastrophically

That was my initial thought when I saw it. If I hadn't been looking at the wiring for an unrelated reason I would never have noticed the damage.
I have no idea how long it has been like that either, last summer I was driving across a mountain range in France, mildly disturbing.

Check the other side as well, if it's not been changed in the past it's unlikely to be any better. Even if there is no visible hole/crack, it's probably crusty.
Mine had small holes in the corroded area, not as big as yours though. Two bushes were completely shot as well.Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue

The other side actually looks ok, maybe it was changed before - but I'll have a closer look.
How it wasn't picked up on the MOT though I have no idea. They are happy to give an advisory on a spurious speck of corrosion on a brake pipe, but miss a massive hole in a suspension arm

Had exactly the same issue,,, in exactly the same place. Just ordered new rear upper and lower arms and also fronts... surprised mine also not picked up on MOT... if i could see it.. im sure they should.
