What a delicate thing is the EPB

EDIT 10:22
Bumped the car into the kerb while parking. Immediately had the boing and red flashing light. I panicked and reversed out to drive to try and make it go away and it went away. Phew,I thought.

Got home, pulled up handbrake switch and boing and red flashing light. Stuck IID tool on and it read an EPB overheat fault (I dont recall code). I cleared the fault but flashing light persists and no EPB. Pulled EPB fuse and left overnight.

Tried it this morning. Red light flashing immediately and yellow light on when i pull up the hand brake switch. EPB is not jammed and emergency pull has not been used. Just will not work.

IID reads C1A00-4B (FB) Control Module, System internal failure- over temperature

Cant seem to find any live readings of the EPB though.

Before I start the long journey of trying to get at the EPB module can anyone think of why the bump may have started all this off and is there anything else I should look at first?

Cheers
Chris

I should have said that I serviced the brakes after the problem first came up and they were all clean and moved easily. I set them according to Bodsys method and tried out the EPB with the same depressing result.

The wiring to the EPB can be a little 'fragile' in places.

I guess the bump could have caused a break in one of the joins?

If yours is an early D3 there's a join behind the NSF wheel liner and one near the NSR shock.

Easy - if fiddly - enough to check.

hmmm, interesting, NSF Could explain why it temporarily became ok again and then finally went kaput. I'll have a rummage through the wiring diagrams.

Marvellous. I have searched the forum for hours on the EPB issue and not come across this thread. Nice one.

Disco Mikey appears to be the man with the magic touch. A long way from me unfortunately but great to learn from him.

I will get under the car today and start checking the connector at the EPB connector ...or maybe the NSF wheel arch. The thing that is throwing me is that the error code I am getting (C1A00-4b(FB) control module overtemperature ) seems to imply that the motor is working when asked to by the parking switch but is drawing too much current...or the temp sensor is broken.

So approach today will be:
- recheck error codes and EPB live values then
- EPB module connector and wiring and be guided by what I find here.

Cheers

update

So took off nsf splashguard, couldn't find connector and then remembered that this changed from 07 a with no connector...mine is 08 duh. While there, got distracted and serviced the disc brake anyway which needed doing.

Onto EPB connector. There is a white cradle affair around the connector. Does anyone know the mechanism for getting this off? I know I am being thick but I put it down to age and the heat. I have tried for half hour and I cant work it out. Does it need two hands?

EPB connector removal

Brilliant Martin, thank you. I would never have found that without taking the whole thing out.

Now off to the car to see if I can execute the instruction!

EPB motor on bench

Well that was fun. It took me 4 days to get the EPB and brake cables out just so that I could have a proper look at it. The bolts were all rusted solid.

Anyway, two questions if someone could please assist:

- what current does the EPB motor draw under no load? I have set it up on the bench and it has so far blown a 15A fuse. I cant tell if its good or not.

- does anyone know of a source for a replacement motor, a Johnson 73677? I cannot see one anywhere.

Many thanks
Chris

Nice research Gary, how are you doing?

I did come across the Renault one myself. I'll measure up and see how they compare for physical sizes

Good find on the Blue Chip Autotronic workshop, I never knew they existed.

Also, I have this morning been given another EPB by forum member Motorworks to compare against my current unit to see if there is any difference in the motors.

EPB motor?

This may indeed actually fit. Ignoring mm rounding then the dimensions appear a match. Worth a punt if I get stuck
