Oil change 5w30 or 5w40 for 2.7 TDV6
Recently bought a 2009 Discovery 3 2.7 TDV6, I am planning on doing the next service myself. I have heard from a few people that it is better to run it on 5w40 rather than the recommended 5w30?

5w30 is the only oil specified by JLR for the UK market.

Though I agree with Disco Mikey, 5W 30 is what the manufacturer specified but we have to remember that manufacturers see the life of a car at about 10 years. They really don't care about old cars, I run an 06 Disco 3 and a 12 RR Westminster. On the Westie I follow the specs as shes new-ish but my Disco is cruising to be 20 in a couple of years. I ran 5W 30 for the first couple of oil changes but then after I did the oil pump and all belts I decided to try the 5w 40.
The fist thing I noticed was it was quieter. There where no oil pressure issues or oil pump circulation delays. I'm going to be doing my second oil change and I will go with the 5w 40 again.
All that said, My disco 3 is a non DPF model with Blanked EGRs by previous owner so I can probably run dishwasher soap and its be fine, but if yours has a DPF you need to consider that. There are lads on here and fullfatrr that are much more proficient on the science than I am. Below is what Liqui Moly say you need if you have a DPF

JLR didn't do the durability testing on the Lion engine project, Lotus did. In Norfolk.
5W30 was chosen as the best compromise between durability and emissions, with emissions being a driving factor.
My choice is to run on 5W40.Richard

Era ya, everyone is going to probably favour 5w 30. For me emissions are not a concern once it passes our Irish CVRT.
My disco is up on 280,000km so its probably got more mileage on it than a lot of the UK cars so maybe that's why the heavier oil seems to suit it. People have done oil analysis tests after using the 5w 40 and they got a clean bill of health so I think there is probably no right or wrong answer in the sense of a 20 year old engine with high mileage is end of life anyways and I think people just need to make a personal choice.
The arguments put forward by LR Time were quite good and most of the arguments against are pretty much its what the manual specs but none of us here have gotten 2 engines, run them on both oils and then ripped them to see wear so we are all winging it really.
@ OP
Do your research and make a choice but DPF is going to probably decide for you as a high ash oil could clog it. My D3 runs with no smoke of any kind and always passes the emissions test.

After 100k miles my preference is for 5w40 and have used it in all my customers D3's for years now without issue.
PSA also recommend 5w30 or 5w40 for cold or temperate climates, but not 5w30 if there is a DPF fitted!! 10w40 and 15w40 are their recommendations for hot climates.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thank you all. Mines a 09 plate with 91k on, service history suggests it’s been fairly well maintained I’ll check about the dpf but if it’s no dpf I think I will definitely consider 5w40. I’ve heard the 5w40 is better for engine noise as well and also heard it’s better for the dreaded camshaft problem, not sure if this is legit?

I dont worry about the camshaft in the D3 as its not as big an issue as compared to the 3.0, thats why I ended up with a 4.4TDV8 as Im not sure I could handle the worry of the 3.0. Technically it only happens a small few but for those it happens to its either right off your car or spend 5-10k fixing it which is awful.
