Clutch bleeding, air coming through when reservoir at MAX

This one is very odd.....

Was performing a brake fluid change.

Bleeding the clutch with my pressure bleeder, it just ran out of oil in the pressure tank, but reservois was brim full so carried on a bit, when the oil reached MAX level on brake fluid reservoir it blew pure air through the system and drained the air from the presure bleeded.......

With the oil take-off at the bottom of the resevoir, that the .... is going on?

Tried manual bleed with 2 person method and same problem, oil gets to MAX as it pumps air through..

It looked to be close to the bottom?

I couldn’t believe it would draw air with fluid at the max / well above the MIN?

It’s very odd

Take off is red?

Level was at green, drawing air…..

Try not to allow the bleed tool to empty, if it gets low stop and refill. Check the clutch pedal is fully raised for the initial bleeding and not allowed to fall. The other thing is to keep the pressure in the green zone as the system doesn't like it if it's too high.

Keep recycling the clean fluid until you get the system fully bled, sometimes you need an second person to work the pedal up and down, bleeder attached, and whilst you also bleed at the slave.(close valve on clutch pedal up stroke which may have to be pulled up!!)

If still no joy try removing some fluid from the reservoir and use the bleeder to reverse bleed the fluid from the slave back up to the reservoir!!

They can sometimes be an absolute b@stard to bleed and then other times it's a 10 min job. Rolling Eyes

Thanks.

Also just found this:

Where someone also found that the clutch pulls fluid from Above the MAX mark!
Terrible trap if you fall into it, clutch would never bleed! Looking forward to re-try tomorrow with reservoir over filled.

It’s probably got 3 compartments. If one circuit has a leak, this keeps fluid in the others

That would make sense.

Slight design flaw if it is taking fluid off above the min / max lines. See how it get on this eve with another go.

Maybe the maximum line is for normal use. i.e It allows a brake piston to be pushed back for pad change, without fluid coming out of the container.

All I know is you don’t expect the clutch to draw off air when it’s up at max. So will be keeping it nicely above.

Good news, it bled quickly with a back flush. Lots of air bubbled up.

Used a hand pump bottle (re-purposed spray bottle) and drew fluid off the reservoir and repeated a few times.

Then pumped the clutch 20-30 times and repeated.

Then bled down with pressure bleader. Worked well and more air came out.
Repeated the pumping of the pedal and bleed until no more air.

Well i couldnt help myself but to explain this i cut open an old reservoir.

The clutch has its own feed as we suspected, taken from very high up, right at the FULL level.

Then there are two chambers feeding each individual brake circuit.

Hope this thread saves someone else trying to bleed the clutch and letting the fluid reach the full make where it will ruin your day.
