Correct Engine Oil - D3 2004 High Mileage
Hi all
I’m after a definitive answer on the best oil for my 2004 discovery 3 which is on 200,000 miles.
I used this last time, and same again for this next due oil change at 6000 miles. See image. Mannol 5w30 a3b3 7511 engine oil with a Bosch filter
HOWEVER
I am told on Facebook groups that I should be using different types and never ever seem to get the factual best oil
Can someone on this forum please give me the brand and type of oil if this is not correct. Or confirm if the one I’ve just bought again is the correct one?
ThanksDisco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

I’ll put my head above the parapet
Well I think you are using the correct oil as specified in the manual, so that’s a good start.
5w40 is thicker. So I think the theory is that the thicker oil takes up the gap on a worn engine.
Others say on modern engines shouldn’t need a grade change when they get older.
In reality it probably doesn’t make a lot of difference.
and yes that would still be A3 or B3 assuming it’s available

Hi,
does the Mannol meet WSS-M2C913(D or C) 5W-30 is the correct grade
My D3 got 5W-30 WSS-M2C913-D A5/B5 and was Smith and Allens brand

Forget about grade and look at HTHS. You need a oil that’s over 3.5, a 3.8 would be even better. I would buy this oil. It’s got VW511, Porsche C40 and MB 229.51 and 2 which are all very stringent approvals.
If you want a oil that has a HTHS of 3.5 and a diesel approval then go for a VW 504/507 spec oil.
Just my opinion.

See I’m getting told a5b5 elsewhere now by a good source
Or the Mobil 3000 5w30 XE from Halfords
I’m told this red Mannol a3b3 is wrong on Facebook but correct on here
I’d rather not add a thicker oil than required. Just want to get the correct if it’s a3b3 or a5b5 or equivalentDisco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

I started using a Penrite 5W30 but switched on advice by my Indie to Penrite 5W 40.
The engine has now done 410K KMS and pulls like a train.

Here’s the ACEA grading spec if you want to put yourself to sleep:
This gets revised every few years. The latest version (2021) discontinued A3/B3. The 2016 is an old version, but I linked it because it shows how A3/B3 compares to A5/B5.
It would be nice if JLR provided updated recommendations. The suggested in-spec oil for my NAS V8 hasn’t been available for 15 years.2008 LR3 HSE, 4.4L V8

5W30 A5 is the correct spec for a non DPF D3/4
5W30 C1 is the correct spec for a DPF equipped D3/4
Where these are not available, other grades can be used, such as 5W40 etc
We use C1 in everything 2.7/3.0, without issue. Some we have seen run upto (and over) 300k miles without issue My D3 Build Thread

Mobil is expensive for what it is.
C1 can be more expensive.
So I would say you are better off using your money to change more often. Using something starting with A or B.
Did you fix your fan issue by the way? Did fitting a fuse sort it?

Disco mikey:
Manual says a3b3 OR conform to : WSS-M2C913-B
Is the above code basically a5b5?
Thanks
Pete k:
Not yet it’s winding me up mechanic says it’s supposed to activate when I rev. He’s adamant it’s the thrust bearing. But I’m 1000000% certain it’s the fan and it shouldn’t activate when I rev over 2k
Plan to test the wires as per your reply when I get a chance. I’ve literally been up the wall with work
Still getting codes for front valve too after them charging me almost a grand for front struts
So might go have a whinge when I get a few days offDisco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

I just changed to Castrol Magnatec 5W40 C3.
Oil pressure is built up faster than with 5W30 in my case (270.000km)
