Transmission oil level.
Changed transmission oil today, I drained the sump of 4.5ltrs oil but could only get 4ltrs back in, the idea was to put exactly the same amount back in that I took out, does this mean it has been overfilled from new?It can when others can't,

Did you follow the check and top-up procedure?
---
Clean the area around the transmission fluid drain and filler plugs.
Place a container under the transmission.
Remove the transmission fluid filler/level plug.
Remove the transmission fluid drain plug.
Allow fluid to drain.
Install the transmission fluid drain plug and tighten to 9 Nm (7 lb.ft).
Add 3.5 to 4 litres of the correct transmission fluid, or until a small thread of fluid runs from the filler/level hole.
CAUTION: The gearbox fluid level must only be checked when the temperature of the fluid is between 30 degrees and 50 degrees. The fluid level obtained will be incorrect if the reading is outside this temperature range.
Remove the transmission fluid filler/level plug.
If no fluid loss is apparent when the filler/level plug is removed, with the engine at idle, continue to fill the transmission until a small thread of oil runs from oil filler/level hole.
Install the transmission fluid filler/level plug and tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb.ft).GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics

I used a combination of drain and refill plus the transfusion method when changing the gearbox fluid.GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics

I removed the drain plug first and drained the oil, the car and new oil had been left in a garage overnight so the temperature should be the same, I will repeat the same procedure in a few days/weeks. My method was to put the same amount back as was taken out plus any required to top the level up, but I have 0.5 litres over for some reason. The car has done 75K miles.
I must say even changing this small amount I can tell the difference, particularly on control when inching back or forwards, the oil that was removed looked and smelt good and was not particularly black or smelt burnt.

The fluid level is checked/topped up with the engine running.
In this situation, like in the case of an engine, a part of the oil is circulated through the box's internals and therefore the level will be lower and you'll be able to add that 0.5 liter and fill it to the correct level/quantity.

Alex_pescaru; I missed that bit, thank you
Does the Iid tool read the live temperature of the transmission oil?It can when others can't,

the results I've had from flushing has been outstanding with the wynns trans flush machine

Yes it does on 2.18 possibly before, but if you aren't on 2.18 you should be as there are quite a few updates.
Geoff, the best way to replace the oil is by your method, that is for sure. Just draining and refilling is only 60% efficient at best in my view.Mark.

Or make a double drain/refill.
Drain/refill once, run a few thousand miles to let the oil's detergent properties to do their job and drain/refill again.
Indeed not 100% efficient, but better than once.

Drain and refill as per the workshop manual, then remove the transmission cooler lines and start the engine to pump fluid out of the torque converter. Measure the amount fluid extracted and refill with new fluid, repeat until clean fluid appears from the output line. Check level and top-up if required.GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics

Allan_T's method is the best method if you don't have an automated machine as geoff has.
And I believe the most economical one from the oil quantity used point of view.

If I recall correctly, the diagrams that were printed showing the pipes and the fluid flows, shows them the wrong way around.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

You're correct the workshop manual does show them the wrong way around. I followed Filo's autobox oil change and placed both ends into a container to confirm which was the correct output.GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics
