Fluttering RPM & Vibrations

Hey chaps.

Strange issue. Bought a d3 (TDV6) recently, primarily for mudding. 2007 plate. Obviously it’s a bit of a heap.

Driving it around for the last few days to test, I’ve noticed something peculiar.

Around 1500 RPM give or take, the car seems SUPERBLY treacly, and has zero power. The RPM dips up and down until you plonk your foot down and it downshifts. As soon as it’s past 1800/2000 RPM she goes as good as you expect a 2.5T car to go.

Beyond this, at around 55mph, when the RPMs are hovering around 1500, cruising, there’s a vibration like we’re going over a rumble strip on the M1. Feels like it’s coming from the front end, but I can’t be sure. At 30ish MPH it sounds like a periodic humming, every couple seconds, like a heartbeat… but just of humming instead of pulsing. It kind of fades in and out every few seconds.

Again, shifting down a gear and getting it out of that 1500 RPM range gets rid of the problem.

From what I’ve read, it can basically be anything from a MAF to a whole new gearbox, or drive shaft, TC, joints… and a number of other things. But has anyone had anything similar and cares to report what they found?

I’ve got some MAF cleaner on the go and will dob her into the local LR specialist next week for a diag, but is there anything I can check myself whilst they’re shut for the weekend? I’m not in any way a mechanic so don’t expect me to take the GB off 😄

Cheers
c

Took it to a local LR specialist. As suspected: Torque converter.

They're going to run it through with some Dr.T and some shudderfix.

You need a gearbox flush, but if its juddering bad it might not fix it.

Flack Thumbs Up
