Jack for roadside wheel change?

I’ve searched extensively and concluded that the stock jack isn’t worth using. People then recommended Sprinter bottle jacks, but then there’s a massive thread about those failing too. So I’m now trying to work out what the best thing to carry actually might be. To be clear this is just for carrying in the car for wheel changes to the spare if needed.

It seems like the issue with bottle jacks is they’re not going to work if you want to jack under the suspension arm if the tyre is flat. I’m pretty sold on using the suspension arm as I think the reduction in lift needed helps with risk of the car moving and slipping especially on uneven ground. But if the tyre is flat the clearance is going to be super low. Has anyway worked out exactly what kind of clearance is actually going to be under the arm with a flat tyre?

I considered a decent scissor jack but I think that’s going to be pretty impossible to use under the arm as well.

Has anyone had any success finding a low profile bottle jack that can be used under the suspension arm or are we really left with just carrying a small trolly jack - and is that even flat enough to get under a flat tyre suspension arm?

And you use that on the chassis jacking points?

The LR bottle jack works fine for me on the jacking points, but only if you lower the suspension to access height. It would be nice if it lifted a couple of inches more, and I guess a suitable hard-wood block might be worth carrying, but it works as it is. When looking for a jack, the Draper 13107 bottle jack seemed the best alternative that I could find, rated at 4 tonnes and a 445mm maximum lift. https://www.drapertools.com/product/13107/...k-4-tonne/

I had a tyre let go on the Autoroute in France a few weeks ago, luckily just short of an exit. I have a sprinter jack and it worked absolutely fine (unlike the sodding space saver spare which has gone rusty around the rim so leaked like a sieve).

I jacked from the jacking point if that helps.

Yes, it has a half moon top so jacks on the chassis rails nicely and on other points as you wish.

Infact I like them so much I prefer to use it at home for maintenance. I use one each side to jack it up and then apply axel stands.

The merc bottle jacks, just have a small surface to jack on.

My vehicle's build spec says: Spare Wheel Steel Reduced Section [029IS]

So I'm assuming that the space saver was standard issue.

Well that is what they came with! Actually when I got my D3 it didn't come with any as it has an LPG tank where the spare wheel goes but I acquired one a few years ago.

I had no idea some had space savers - mine is full size and is supposed to be according to the VIN: Spare Wheel - Underfloor - Spare Wheel Alloy Full Size - so was that an optional extra or included in the spec?

My sprinter jack has a half moon same as the old LR ones. I know people were doing conversions to remove the half moon and put a washer on the top so it located into the jacking hole on the D3 chassis but I have never seen the need.

I agree the old LR type bottle jacks were actually very good, the Defender 130 I used to have came with one as you couldn't get to the jacking points on the back crossmember to use the awful monstrosity that Defenders were usually supplied with. Stupidly I let it go when the Defender was sold Sad

My guess is someone paid extra for it, I have only ever seen the space savers. That said following the escapade if someone has an 18" full size wheel going spare I am in the market for one!

Just stick an ad in the wanted action with a photo of the style you are looking for and I’m sure someone will have a spare kicking around... I know I do but you’re a bit far away Laughing

Get the old LR red bottle jack with 2 "horns". Still find them new / used on eBay.
Under lower suspension arms.
Two pumps.
Remove and fit spare.
