bad start below 1°C

Hello All,

I am posting here because I seem to get better responses in here than on the D5 section.

I have a D5 TDV6. It starts absolutely PERFECTLY every time when the temperature is above 5°C.

At the moment, the temperature is below freezing, and it always starts, but seems to not run on all cylinders for approximately 3-4 seconds.

There are not error codes recorded. No Check Engine light. Nothing.

It ONLY does this when below freezing, and ONLY when it has been standing all night. If I leave it for 8 hours while I am at work, it will still start fine.

Battery is good.

Fuel is good.

Am I correct that the first (and most likely) cause for this issue will be the glow-plugs?

Are these covered by the LR extended warranty (my D5 is 6 years old, but I bought it as a NEW vehicle with 5 years warranty just coming up for 4 years ago).

Thanks in advance for your advice/comments.

Nick

To answer your question re. Glowplugs, yes, but this is just one of a few things that it CAN be.
At the low temps. It's good practice to give the glow plugs a chance to actually heat up.
If you're aware of starting a diesel, and best practice, then I apologise.
Try leaving the ignition on without starting for about 10-15 secs. Then start.
My D4 benefits massively by doing this.
You state that battery and fuel are good. If battery is spinning the motor over well, then it sounds like you ruled it out. Bare in mind that over time you can get lulled by how the motor sounds spinning. How old is the battery really? If it's unknown then it's worth checking if it's on top form.
The fuel system can suffer with fuel pressure issues, and again, a pressure check would be a next stop check.
If you have access to someone with a BTII diagnostic tool, then there are few things that can be ruled out also.
Try the ignition start 15s pause and see how you get on.

Thanks for the reply!!

Regarding the battery... it is 1 year old... it is a AGM deep-charge battery that exceeds the LR requirements.

Sadly, and I thought that the D4 was like this, I cannot let the glow plugs heat up for 15 seconds, because it is "button start". The glow plugs don't start don't heat up if I just turn on the ignition. They only heat up if I have foot on the brake, and then press the Start button.

Regarding fuel pressure... if it were the fuel pressure, would I not also have the same issue at warmer temperatures?

I am trying to do some diagnosis by elimination before I take it to the Stealer because I simply don't trust them as far as I can throw them!!

Thanks again if you have any ideas what I can test.

Forgot to mention... I also have a secondary battery for the winch that it installed.

It is separated from the main battery with a Traxide USI-160 that gives me the possibility to "connect" the secondary battery in the event that the main battery is too weak. I have tried connecting the two batteries, and it makes no difference, so that would imply that either BOTH batteries are weak, or the battery is not the issue. Wink

Just because the glow plug light does not light does not mean that the GP are not on.
D4 is push button start.
Have you tried?
Turn ignition on: no footbrake
Wait
Footbrake: start

Reasonable to assume battery is good then.

Will try tomorrow, but I am pretty sure that it doesn't make any difference.

I had this issue last winter and LR in Luxembourg refused to admit that there was a problem even though I showed them a video of the issue. They said that since they could not reproduce the issue (the temperatures had risen above 1-2°C) they would not admit that there was any issue.

The D5 is now in extended warranty, so I am slightly concerned that the extended warranty will not cover the glow-plugs.

My D4 won't turn over until the glow plug light has gone off on the dash.

Yes... the D5 is the same... you see that the coil light comes on. The moment that it goes out, the starter motor fires.

When I turn the ignition on, the coil light doesn't come on at all. It ONLY comes on when I press the start button with the brake pedal pressed down.
