Help .... vibration under braking ongoing |
|
Hi All, has anyone been able to cure the vibration in the steering wheel when braking without having to change the brake discs, the car has only done 65000 miles and is on its 4th set of disks, the last time it was upgraded to 380mm discs and 6 pot Brembo style calipers and the shake comes back every time after about 2000 miles I am now starting to think that it is something more severe than a warped disc.
if anyone can shed any light on this issue I would be grateful as I really don't want to change the discs again before its MOT Tintenter

I rejected a new D4 for the same problem. The thread is on here. I thought it was that one or both of the guns weren’t “true”. It wasn’t.
Fortunately I had LR finance on it and they stepped in and the outcome was very satisfactory. It didn’t occur on my other three D4’s.
From memory, Gareth and some others had the same issue. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Mine was down to a wheel bearing, there was no play when tested on the car, but when it was off it made a terrible noise.

Thanks for the replies guy's, I am about due to change the wheels around for even wear and will see if that has any effect. other than that looks like I am spending more money to change bearings and track rod ends as that's all that's left as it already has had front lower wishbone bushes done. I too had the same problem with my new MY11 D4 Landmark and went through the rejection process.
Back then there was a TSB out for the issue, but my chassis number was outwith that, so all LR allowed the dealer to do was a "sticking plaster" approach by just replacing the discs & pads.
Getting fed up with multiple replacements, I then wrote to CEO Ralf Speth rejecting the D4.
Well all hell let loose, there were LR HO personnel sent to my dealer Ripon LR.... my service manager wondered who I really was getting this sort of attention & action....
... the short of it .... it got sorted properly! ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Mine did that.
It had new discs, pads, new lower arms, new top arms, new wheel bearings. The wheels got dizzy changing them around, including spare set.
None of that fixed it.
Does very few miles now but at 154,000.
During the first covid lockdown, it was not used. When it did get used after four months. It had healed itself?

What size wheels have you got fitted? there are two different racks, one has additional internal damping for L319/320 fitted from factory with larger wheels.

wheels are 20" factory fitted but I do have 30mm spacers fitted front and rear since new, a little further info is that the vibration only started after the first change of disc and pads, never had it at the start. Tintenter

OEM discs or drilled & grooved?
I'd also check the inner edge of the tyres for stepping / castellation

The first three sets were OEM Flat 360mm discs, the last set was 380mm discs, and the new 6 pot calipers were from Advance Factors so no cutting corners. but vibration continues to reoccur after around 2000 miles. Tintenter

What pads did you fit? I doubt it's the issue but when was the last brake fluid change?
If you can, take the pads out and give the leading edges a chamfer with a hand file, see if that changes anything.
Ideally the discs & hubs need a runout check but that's probably beyond what equipment you have available. (unless you have an ex-BT dial test indicator )

Flatlander, good shout on the possible runout (and how did you know I used to work for BT) I had crossed my mind, pads at the moment are Delphi but willing to try anything to find the cause and cure. The brake fluid has been changed 2 months ago when I had the belts and major service done. Tintenter
