Theft of removable towbar |
|
Well the scrotes have been at work again and have stolen my detachable towbar
I have a couple of questions for the masses.
1) I have seen the securing plates being advertised, have anyone seen if they work/dont work?
2) I am thinking of maybe a fixed tow bar this time as its harder to nick, any down sides I should consider?
I guess also finally, does anyone have any for sale (reputable source/proof of ownership)?
Thanks all

Best method is not to leave them in when not in use :s not just for theft but there’s plenty of threads regarding corrosion causing issues as well.
There’s plenty on eBay (probably nicked) average is around £250 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

Hi,
Join the club !
Did you phone it in to the Police? They need to hear of these thefts........
I'm going fixed tow bar............
Not sure the plate and bolts will make it any more secure.
There is a video on YouTube showing removal of the towbar with a hammer and punch in less than a minute!
So a couple more mins for a battery screwdriver on the bolts at the towbar will be gone.
Possibly the same with the fixed towbar, but a bit more effort on the ground under the vehicle........
Thanks

Seems to have been a lot of that going on... I guess they're called detachable for a reason
If you go fixed then I certainly recommend the TowTrust TL1... no downsides I can think of other than not walking into it at night (ask me how I know ? )
Upside is it looks very cool I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

If you search on here there were some tech drawings with dimensions to make your own plate.
Then once fitted slather the fixing bolts in the most disgusting sticky black grease you can find.

Thanks for the advice people.
I should have thought about before, but live in a sleepy village and there car does not normally get left anywhere suspect.
Then went on holiday and forgot to remove it before leaving it at the airport and its gone.
On the one hand you kick yourself for leaving it on. Then you have to remember that its not your "fault" you left it on, its their fault they nicked it.
Anyway, blame aside, just need to get it sorted (out my own pocket) now.

When you join this site there should be a pop-up welcoming you and telling you:
- If you have a detachable towbar, keep it detached unless you're using it - unless you want to buy it back off eBay for £250 a week later
- The smoke coming out of the wheel arch on the first frosty day of ownership is fine
- If you have a full sized spare get a protector or that will be on eBay shortly after your towbar
- The wire under the bonnet by the battery that's not connected to anything is fine
Should reduce site traffic by about 35% D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

We use a towbar mouted to cycle rack to go for days out cycling, I've got fed up of taking the rack and the towbar off everytime we stop for fear of it being stolen.
I've now fitted a tow-trust fixed bar for ease.
Haven't got round to listing my bar yet but what sort of price should i be asking with 2 keys, genuine LR, light use only as well as the bit that secures it into the rear cubby? Is £250 really the going rate?

Not far off - Example - https://disco4.com/forum/sale-removable-tow-bar-200581.html
I'd also prefer to buy on off a known member who I know is selling it genuinely rather than funding supply and demand of stolen ones. D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

That's not my advert, it's just an example of a sold one
When I still had my D4, I sold my detachable for more than it cost to buy a fixed TowTrust bar in immaculate condition. D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

That's exactly what I have just done, got the fixed bar brand new from towtrust for £221.16 all in, I think i'll knock up an advert for my removeable and pop it on here for that plus postage.

Hi,
when did they go up so much used to be about £120-£150
if you Do buy another detachable can you paint it GOLD or some other eye catching colour then we can see if its the same towbar that just keeps going around and around
As said they take no longer to remove Key or no key and for preventative maintenance (never mind stopping it getting nicked) remove a removable after every use.
