Cold starting issue - what to check?

So, I’m back in the Snow with the Disco 3 (defender STILL in rebuild). We have some decent tyres on this time, and all is generally going well, but…

The car will not start first thing in the morning. Needs a long time to warm up, jump starting doesn’t help, the boost pack doesn’t help. We ordered a brand new battery thinking that was the problem, French Amazon Prime came up trumps and delivered it last week, and a good long run to Geneva and back should have charged it. Still won’t start first thing in the morning.

Temperatures overnight are between -2 and -13º C.

If we bump/push start, that works fine. If we go through the glow routine multiple times, that seems to eventually work ok. Engine sounds rough on start up. (Separately, fuel economy is a bit off, but that might be unrelated).

Reading through the forums and google generally, I think it might be three things:

1. Water in the fuel filter freezing. Not sure what would make it start eventually, or why a bump works, but could be. How do I check for this?

2. Glow plug(s) failure. No fault codes on the GAP IID, and not sure again how I would diagnose this.

3. Injector issues. No fault codes, no idea how I would diagnose.

Any suggestions from the learned folk on here?

Glow plug failure does not generate fault codes on the D3

As it starts with a push start okay, then it sounds like an electrical problem. Water in the fuel would not let it start at all when frozen, although the water trap should be checked and drained (assume one is fitted to your vehicle). The new battery voltage should be checked, assume you purchased one with the correct cca. I would still be looking at electrical.

Thanks both. Looking at the link to the glow plugs on RRSport now.

For checking the water trap - any insight on how to do this? I’ll do some searching now.

As temperatures have got a bit warmer (-4 to +5) it’s starting ok - the colder it is the rougher it is.
