Body off jobs
Having body lifted this week for complete new suspension wiring harness fitted after numerous issues and finding numerous bodge repairs. So, considering other jobs - I am having the turbo actuator arm sorted as whilst its not seized, its quite stiff and throws up the usual DTCs when I boot it.
Is there an upgraded actuator arm? if so does anyone have a part number?
Also thinking of changing the intercooler hoses, looking for silicon ones, can anyone recommend a decent brand and are there just 3 to replace.
Got a list of other bits to check and have done when the body is off.

I compiled this list from the forum a few years ago, much of it contributed by Disco_Mikey. It might be worth a read through:-
Many people have asked whether it is necessary, or desirable, to have the body off for certain jobs in particular the 105k / 7 year service to facilitate changing belts
It might be sensible to compile a list of jobs worth considering if and when one has the body off:-
Front & Rear Belts
Front & Rear Tensioners plus Bolts (In the Kit)
Two Idlers Pulleys Plus Bolts (In the Kit)
Oil Pump Casing
Oil Seal for Crankshaft
Crankshaft Bolt
Consider replacing water pump - flush & replace coolant.
Inspect all brake pipes & replace rear brake lines
Front + rear upper arms
Consider changing intercooler hoses, particularly the 2 small ones with silicon
Turbo actuator rod
Check EPB cables
Autobox filter
Clean in-tank pump gauze
Carefully inspect the wiring for damage, and repair if required
Check rear air conditioning pipes
Check EGRs & turbo & turbo pipes
Check High Pressure Fuel Pump
Clean intercooler & radiator - consider replacing & upgrading intercooler
Check all suspension bushes & shims - takes around 60 seconds with the body off.
Check cross-over pipe at rear of the engine
Wash chassis & underside of body, rub down and underseal any rust reapply Waxoil where necessary.
Remove the turbo, fit new modified actuator rod. Take out the studs and drill the threads out to 8mm. Use 2x M8 flange bolts to refit. This aids future turbo removal massively, and is also much quicker.
Check fuel injectors & glow plugs
If a manual clean XY sensor and consider fitting new clutch (& flywheel) - 1 hours labour as opposed to 6 to 8 hours.
By 100,000 miles expect to have done:-
Wishbones.
Steering tie rods.
ARB bushes.
Ball joints
Steering Column Universal Joints
Suspension bushes, you can get carried away with these. Most common are the rear uppers and front lowers. Body off makes no difference to front lowers, but the rear uppers are 5 mins a side, as opposed to 2 hours with the body in place. A perfect excuse to upgrade to the RRS arms.
Check the exhaust system, it rarely gives any issues. But, a perfect excuse to consider replacement or upgrade.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what does Body Off mean. I've seen it used s few times on this forum. It's not a term I'm familiar with here in NZ.

the BENEFITS are you can get to parts easily and so cut costs ..if you visit solihull on a factory visit you can see the final bit where the body is dropped on...unlike ordinary cars where parts are added to a body
as it goes through the factory..clever in a way but difficult to get your head around...

One day I'll get over to England - see where my DNA is from, Solihull factory tour would be a must see. Wife and I plan to come over in our retirement, in 12 or so years.

Hi Matty, If you are having actuator issues then you may need to look further than the arm, it's quite likely the actual vanes and ring in the turbo are carboned up. Might be worth looking at getting the turbo rebuilt for peace of mind.

In addition to the above, consider replacing the exh downpipe studs/nuts, and those of the crossover pipe flanges. (carefully inspect the crossover pipe too and it's insulation/brackets)
If you have to do these afterwards and they snap or deform it will be painful! yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thanks Chris, The garage can get my turbo bench tested to make sure everything else is ok. Apparently the teeth of the actuator gears are plastic and can sheer so your right, before it all goes back together ill be confident I have a good turbo
