Evening All,
Hope all is well.
Doing some research in preparation to getting the keys to a Disco 3, the knowledge and information on this forum is amazing.
I am however looking into the EPB issues, I understand there are lots of walkthroughs and parts available now that keep costs down when things go a little pear shaped. However I would like to avoid any issues arriving in the first place.
So, are there any maintenance schedules or services that you can perform on the EPB system to avoid it jamming/failing?
Many Thanks,
Jack

Keep an eye on the hand brake shoes and don’t let them get too low, there’s an inspection hole in the disc.
Just done all my discs and pads and checked the h/brake shoes and just lubricated the contact patches between the shoes and the backplates with a bit of copper slip which made the operation much quieter.
Use it regularly, I use mine always when I park on my drive and use the auto release regularly at junctions.
And as always keep your fingers crossed 😉 Steve

That’s good to know, I’m hoping to go right through the vehicle once I get the keys. With this in mind anything that I can do as part of preventative maintenance will either be done or planned in.
Trying to make a list of things that I can do apart from oil changes to try and avoid any early problems

I service mine every 2 years and touch wood i have never had an issue.
A diagnostic machine like gap that can put the epb into mounting mode are a must to be able to dismantle the shoes Andrew

When you service the system what do you actually do?
As in what to lubricate and what with? Anything to adjust of measure, check or change?
I’m also assuming that the GAP tool allows a sort of ‘maintenance mode’

clean/adjust and service annually or if you do serious off road stuff consider it afterwards, all you need to know is on here

If you take care of it it works fine

You need to remove the shoes and make sure the levers move ok then lubricate with copper grease.
Clean the back plate to remove and brake dust, clean and lubricate the adjuster.
Refit the shoes using a small amount of copper grease on the contact points and the hand brake cables.
Refit the brake disc and adjust the shoes following Bodsy's brake bible.
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic52130.html
Gap lld allows you to put the park brake into a service mode called mounting mode that allows the epb to unwind the handbrake cables giving you the extra length required to remove and reattach the cables from the shoes.
Shoes are quite cheap so i would recommend replacing them the first time you service the handbrake. Other diagnostic tools will also do the job.
Then every two years remove the discs inspect the shoes and clean with brake cleaner and ensure everything moves freely .then adjust as per the brake bible.
If you keep the handbrake adjusted and lubricated correctly the shoes should never wear and the epb will work without fault.
A lot of poorly serviced handbrakes sieze and get stiff which causes the the brake to stick on and wear the shoes away. the epb then has to pull the cables a lot further to get the brake to come on causing wear inside the epb and failures. Andrew

Just had a quick read through bodzy’s bible and I must say I’m very impressed. Clear and well written, a lot better than most maintenance manuals I’ve come across.
This is exactly the kind of thing I was after, I’ve been a maintenance fitter for a few years now and realise some machines just need a bit more care than others. I’m hoping with a little bit of fettling here and there, the disco can be a relatively reliable daily drive.
Cheers for the help people, very much appreciated.
