Rear wiper problems
Hey folks,
Having issues with the rear wiper. It’s been a bit intermittent for a while but now just makes a grinding noise and doesn’t move.
I have stripped the motor out of the tailgate and it works fine. I gave it a good clean and lube, refitted without the arm and all works fine.
I gave the arm a good clean and lube so it seems to work as expected with the spring/hinge.
I refit the arm and it’s not working again.
Any suggestions on what to try next?
Thanks.

Is the spline worn that the wiper fit onto?- if that's ok the gearbox in the wiper box has failed. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I have stripped down my wiper motor and can see that the plastic gear is stripped on one side. Its created a nice grove in the plastic.
I did have a look at a second hand one but unsurprisingly it had the same issue.
Is it possible to get the gear as the rest of the motor is in very good condition?
Just trying to avoid spending £150+ on a new one

Update on this - The gear works perfectly.
The gear seems to be sold as a replacement for a Freelander wiper motor with no mention of a disco 3
Really easy job to replace.
1. Remove wiper motor
2. remove 6 screws holding back plate on
3. remove toothed bar that drives the wiper shaft
4. remove the plastic gear being careful not to lose the spring washer behind it
5. remove the brass electrical contact from the existing gear and push onto the back of the new gear. Use a dab of superglue to hold down if needed
6. refit the gear, the drive bar and the back plate.
7. Wash the silicone grease of you hands and refit the motor.
All of this assumes that the wiper shaft is free and turns easily.
