Biodiesel / cooking oil

Hello, I have had a search and can't find any answers although i'm sure it must have been asked previously....

With the Fuel situation as it is (no fuel shortage, just brain shortage in the public)

Can you add cooking oil to the Disco fuel tank to extend the half tank I have in it currently?

Say 15L of the stuff?

Technically it should be fine, if its ok it might get me by for another day

i thought only the older basic common rail diesels could run off cooking oil/bio fuel ?
the more modern electronically controlled injection systems detect the fuel quality and it causes issues ?

i could be wrong though

In a nutshell if it is a common rail engine of any age avoid neat veg oil or anything that has a higher viscosity than normal derv, even non common rail it varies on what variety of injection system is fitted.

My old 300TDI used to run fine on a 50/50 mix of diesel and veg oil, smelt like a chip shop mind. I wouldn't suggest running it in anything newer though.

No you cannot put veg oil in your D3 or D4, I use to run our old nissan Terrano on svo neat no issues mechanicle pump and injectors any old Tdi will work fine. I also use to make my own bio but it was a messy business and the terrano worked well on svo so I got ride of my bio processor .

agree ... 300tdi ran quite happily on the stuff. got to about 80% before it was an issue and that was only because I put the veg oil in the day before the diesel.

CostCo used to have a limit on how much veg oil you could buy because folks were running cars on it.

ISTR 2% is the max that can be used in a D3, D4 0%, even bio diesel added at the pumps which ISTR is 12% maximum cannot be used in engines with a HP fuel pump.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I think the "bio" in biodiesel is a different thing than adding veg oil to diesel ... sainsburys used to be (IIRC) 5% and may now be 10% on their "green" diesel pumps.

it's all down to viscosity and, I guess, effective molecule sizes. The modern (very)HP injectors can't cope.
