Replace "mother" with "parent who has given birth" ?

Quote:
LGBT+ charity Stonewall is urging organisations to drop the word ‘mother', and replace it with ‘parent who has given birth'

Please help - how should one refer to a grandmother?

Should one refer to a father as "a parent who provided spermatozoa".

How should one refer to a grandfather?

.....and on 20th June many off us will be celebrating "parent who hasn't given birth day". Waiting to see how Clinton Cards will get a cheesy stanza onto their cards with that mouthful Wink

Refer to them as a grandmother or grandfather, unless you know that they don’t wish to be referred to as such as they identify themselves differently.

Your choice then if you want to be rude to them or accept their wishes. Thumbs Up

I'm with LT - refer to someone as they want to be referred. I don't agree with Stonewall requiring organisations to make blanket changes, but if an employee / customer wants to be referred to as "mother" or "person who gave birth", then respect that wish.

What is of far greater concern is how an organisation that is basically a lobby group got into such an influential position in so many institutions.

From the Free Speech Union's assessment on the Online Safety Bill (here), OfCom (who will be in charge of regulating social media companies) have generated their own list of protected characteristics:

OfCom wrote:
[advised broadcasters that]...“hate speech” in their programmes now means: “all forms of expression which spread, incite, promote or justify hatred based on intolerance on the grounds of disability, ethnicity, social origin, sex, gender, gender reassignment, nationality, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, colour, genetic features, language, political or any other opinion, membership of a national minority, property, birth or age”

* Is "colour" different to "race"? Is this being inclusive to Oompa Loompa's?
* "Genetic features"? Big noses, ginger hair, susceptibility to heart disease, eye colour?
* "Property"? What does than mean?
* "Birth"? Caesarean vs natural? Does not compute!

It could have ended at "...justify hatred.".

(The whole Bill looks a load of Censored )

I must confess to being fairly confused on these issues.

What is acceptable or correct seems to vary rather quickly, and also geographically.

A couple of years ago in Atlanta GA. I was upbraided for asking for a white coffee - I should have asked for coffee with milk; I was told at that time that should I want black coffee I should ask for coffee without milk.

I see white & black coffee advertised, and spoken about here in the UK apparently without causing offence.

Reality is that only a very tiny minority would be offended by such a description of coffee. Just as very would not mind you asking to buy a black car. As it’s referring to the colour of an object, substance etc. not a person.

Colour comes from racial background. But, true, "mixed-race" != "race".
