How do I change the registration number?
I want to change the reg on the Disco. I have the number already as the car that had the number has now been scrapped (and registered scrapped). When I go onto the Gov website it's asking me for retention numbers etc. I just have the log book from the scrapped car. I'm not too sure what to do now. Anyone done this before?
Many thanks

I may be wrong, but I think it's too late if it's been scrapped and can't be done.

What I thought. I made sure I got my plate off Dark Bluie before she was exported, ie scrapped overseas.

Yep, pretty sure you needed to put the reg onto a retention certificate before you scrapped the old motor.

As others have said if not on retention its gone
From the web
“If you have a registration plate on a car that you are selling or scrapping then you must make an application to retain the registration by assigning it to a Retention Document (V778). ... Once the vehicle changes ownership or becomes scrapped or written off the number plate is lost.”MY24 Defender 90 X-Dynamic HSE

They were ridiculously helpful helping me re-use my plate when first D4 got nicked..

yeh they still do phone calls, and online chat (but that can more a hinderance than help sometimes depending on the person you get at DVLA)
definitely worth speaking to DVLA and the scrap yard to see what can be done. If you still have the V5 for the scrapped car in your possession and name then you may still be able to retain the number (cost £85) and transfer to a new car2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten
and give covid or Brexit as your excuse for not following the process. Everyone else does

As said, if it's on a car it needs to be taxed and motd (or exempt) if it's not on the car it needs to be on a retention document. My guess is the reg is lost when the car was scrapped.

I think the small print says that reg transfer is only allowed from a vehicle that has been taxed or SORN, without a break, for the past five years. MOT is only relevant to road tax.
If you have a vehicle which does not meet the above requirements, waiting some months (or years) may achieve complianceChris

You must have your V778 and new log book before you scrap or sell your vehicle - otherwise you’ll lose the right to use the private number.

Was the logbook in your name at the time of scrapping and how long ago was it scrapped?
You may be able to appeal this in light of the COVID shut down but only if the above two questions in your favour..
