Body panel steel thickness
Hi,
Is there a standard figure for D3 panel thickness e.g. metal on roof and bonnet? How does it compare to panel thickness for regular cars by other brands? I'm asking because I'm wondering if there is greater resistance to hail damage.
Thanks,
Andy

I think there's a mixture of metals with varying strengths, the locations of which depend on where the strength is required most. As for the thickness I can only offer a guess regarding a panel skin thickness which I would say is around 1.5mm or perhaps even a bit less.
As you will already know an aluminium alloy is used in the bonnet and the upper and lower tail gates. The remainder of the body is steel divided into five categories. Soft steel, dual phase steel, high strength, extra high strength and ultra high strength steel. Magnesium is used for the front panel and a few other smaller places.
I would have thought most manufacturers have a similar panel thickness for external steel body panels, even if that thickness is ever reducing due to performance and environmental demands.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I remember seeing a D3 in 2007 , in Andermatt that had hail damage I would say it was written off . The dents were about golf ball size though
