Electronic dip stick

This is a bit of a strange one.

does the electronic dip stick show the total amount of oil on the reading ie 0 is completely empty and full is 6ltrs?

Someone has been using my D4 and when going down a steep hill and going around a sharp bend the engine has suffered from oil starvation and damaged the bottom end.
The electronic dipstick is showing half full but I have drained out less than 3 ltrs.

The driver assumed that the dipstick worked like a normal dipstick where even on minimum you would still have a good quantity of oil in the sump and 1ltr would top it up to max but I'm not sure after draining the oil

from about 1/4 full on the display my D4 took a 1L bottle leaving it just under the full mark. So the display is not a true indication of the total amount of oil in the sump.
If there has been oil starvation could it be the oil level sensor is giving a faulty reading ?

They are very slow to get a proper reading, I always use my IID tool to get a more accurate measure. If it was low on oil, one has to ask why, has it had the turbo oil pipe mod done?.

Flack Thumbs Up

Hi Flack it had a complete engine rebuild around 17k ago so i tnink that the oil usage is just from the rings bedding in. It has had the shortened turbo pipe fitted when it was apart. I drove it around for about 1000 miles to run the engine in and it then had an oil change. Unfortunetly its was lent to a contractor to collect a large number of vehicles all accross the country and i havent seen it since January. The contrator is saying he checked the oil at the start of every day and its never dropped below half way on the gauge and he has never added any oil.
Normally it gets an oil change every 10k as its towing all the time but as i have not seen the vehicle so have been unable to monitor the mileage.
I got the body off and engine out today but didnt have time to get the sump off to see what damage has been done

It sounds like a poor engine rebuild to me, 16k miles and half way down the electronic stick sounds about right and being half way down should not cause any oil starvation, the shape of D3/4 sump allows them to run on a minimum amount of oil even on steep hills although it is not recommended practice.
