Help with EPB

Hello,

Had the dreaded EPB squeal a while back, solved adjusting and cleaning. A few days ago the squeal returned. This time I replaced the EPB shoes along with discs and pads.

Went to use the epb to test operation and it made a horrible noise. Turned out the cable came off on one side. I had one side on and one side off. I had to pull the emergency cable to release. Re attached the cable and now I have an error code saying emergency EPB cable released. How to I over come this? This is the only error message being stored.

The EPB works as an emergency brake but it will not apply using the switch I just get the red flashing light with parking brake fault message on the dash.

Thanks,
Jamie

Back off the adjusters on both sides so there is the maximum amount of slack on the cables, then foot on brake, hold down EPB switch and turn on ignition, hold EPB switch for 10 seconds or until you can hear it winding back to reconnect the cables internally. if that doesn't work, you may have to disconnect both ends from the shoes and push inwards (both sides at the same time, so help required) to force a reconnect - you should hear a faint click and as you pull one side, it will draw in the other cable.

As the EPB works as an emergency brake would this not suggest that it is connected?

Will the above still work?

The EPB doesn't work as an emergency brake, the EPB switch being pulled upwards above 6km/h is signalled on CAN to the ABS module which applies the service brakes on all four wheels. If you were waiting for the EPB drum brakes to stop you, you'd need a calendar, not a stopwatch.

The clue to the purpose of the EPB is the 'P' in the acronym - 'Park' it's there to hold the vehicle in position, the shoes are relatively soft with good friction but with poor longevity or resistance to heat, they're not a service brake.

I understand thanks.

So, undo the adjusters to max slack, foot on brake, hold EPB switch down when switching on ignition and hold switch down for 10 seconds.

Hopefully this will work.

That's pretty much it - if your diagnostics is able to drive to service or latching position, that will do the same. if the cable has extended too far (it's possible that the still connected cable is over-adjusted) then you'll have to manually latch the two cables together as described above.

I have tried to put the cable into latching mode but I just get a loud strange noise.

Only error code being stored is emergency release cable has been pulled.
