Instrument Cluster fault - actual fault |
|
Hi All,
New to the forum, i have scanned through the many posts about the faulty instrument clusters and people having them repaired for circa £150.
Does anyone know what the actual fault is ? i read that pre 2007 the cluster used different soldier, if that the case does it just require going over all the joints ??
Thanks

Post 2007 dashes use lead free solder that can crack and cause problems.
They normally go around the back of the connector on the top where the canbus wiring is but in therory they can go anywhere and i have heard of people resoldering the chips back on.
£150 is well worth the money as they dont just repair they fully test all on the dash.

Ok cool, thank you, you have kind of answered all my questions really as I was thinking of looking myself as I have a very powerful soldering iron for work etc but don’t have a test bench etc
Was thinking of stripping down myself. I still mught just out of curiosity.
Would you recommend a specific company for the refurbishment ?
Thank you

Powerful iron is not what you want.
Small tip more appropriate I think

Maybe that came accross wrong, I have decent Metcal soldering iron with tiny tips that heat perfectly for component resistors etc. I use this for Ecu s. Have done for years 👌🏽

Repair tips
Just remember the imboliser is part of the dash
If you fxck it up your cars not moving
So at least park is sensibly (not blocking’s in other cars) before removing dash

Hi guys. I have a 54 Plate D3 which, up until this afternoon, was displaying these Instrument Cluster type problems. Could this also be the Solder starting to fail or is this only an issue for post 07 Models?
Thanks.

Normally its only post 2007 but it may have had a dash replaced.
Although the early dashes are not known to fail due to solder issues they can still fail, i would send it away to Totaltronics they will be able to test it and repair if required. Andrew

Hi aja.
I have a 07 d3.
cluster powers off intermittently. Now i have an issue with doors locking / unlocking and hazards whilst driving.
Could the faulty cluster casue this? Would a test by totaltronics show this?

Yes normally the solder cracks around the top of plug on the circuit board which are the canbus wires and will effect other circuits in the car.
Totaltronics will be able to test and repair the dash Andrew

It's the lead-free solder used on post-2007 models to comply with RoHS regs which causes the issue.
Totaltronics charge more than £150 for a D3 instrument cluster fix (I think I paid about £230), but it's worth it - he gives a lifetime warranty on all his repairs.

I also use Acutronics for electronic repairs, i dont know how much they charge for a dash repair but they fully test things first and if they dont find anything they only charge the return postage.
I would like to think Totaltronics would do the same. Andrew
