MOT Fail - Emissions
Hey folks,
My D3 just failed its MOT. Got the usual suspension bushes, the propshaft centre bearing and "Exhaust emissions exceed manufacturers specified limit". Plus an advisory for "Exhaust emits excessive smoke or vapour"
I have just purchased an AP200 code reader and have:
P029B-00 Cylinder 1 balance - Fuel trim at minimum limit (intermittent)
P02AE-00 Cylinder 6 balance - Fuel trim at maximum limit (intermittent)
P121A-00 Cylinder balance - Injector restricted (intermittent)
So, any ideas what I am looking at?
I am guessing the injector issues may be related to the emissions failure. Apparently the limit is 1.14 and mine is 1.28
Is this something I can easily remedy or is it a new set of injectors or is the engine stuffed :-)
Thanks

Your emission limit is listed on the chassis plate under the bonnet, it will say 1.14 if this accidently gets covered up with a service sticker they will use the Mot standard value of 2.5

A lot of manufacturers have put low emissions values on the chassis plates and lied about emissions when designing vehicles, You may have read about Volkswagen.
Vosa decided to get nasty and insist that the manufacturers values are used if its lower than there value, a lot of cars will not pass using the manufacturers values even if they are well serviced.
An MOT inspector must look for and use this value if it can be seen on the vehicle, if its covered up or illegable they will use the higher standard its been covered quite a bit on other vehicle forums.

That's not very nice for the car owner!
How on earth is a garage meant to get a used car to pass a value when a new car wouldn't
I heard fiesta's were having this issue
Edit. Mine has a label 1.18 (early model)

Rumour has it that the adhesive used on the plate / sticker is susceptible to common lubricants/water dispersal sprays, leaving no trace it was ever there.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

When i lived in UK my Freelander always passed MOT in flying colors, always used a fuel additive on it. I think it was "Archoil" something.
The MOT guy in told it was probably because of that additive that emissions were so low. (I also had the EGR disabled by blocking the vacuum line to it.)

Emissions stickers aside, it does smoke a bit when idling but nothing when driving. That plus the error codes makes me think injectors may need looking at
Anyone got any experience of this?

You could take the “advice” here on board and take it to a different MOT station?

I'd say you need 2 or 3 injectors.
you need to see and post the injector offset values (at idle) to see which ones faulty

Oh it’s tempting!
Also want to see if there is an underlying issue. Covering all bases

Up to last year my local MoT tester couldn't get a smoke reading at all on my D3, just went through the fastpass with a comment of smoke so low it couldn't be read. . This year it read 0.90, it's now done 155k miles , but hasn't been used much this last year due to Covid. Had new injectors at about 110K miles
