MoT in uk, test of epb and opacity in exhaust gas? |
|
Here in sweden normal procedure is to; at low speed apply the epb to check that its working.
And to check that the engine runs environmental nice the rev the engine to max and test exhaust gas with
an opacity analyzer.
How do these checks work in the UK?

Pretty much the same, most good garages use a Tapley/Bowmonk meter for brake/epb effort, its almost an unwritten rule for all 4x4s to be tested this way, most normal 2wd cars are tested on the brake rollers.
Handful of revs on smoke machine, if results are clean you can get a fast pass almost straight away, if a little dirty/cold engine then you get a few more tries.
Any modern engine will pass the smoke test with no issues, older ones can be hit and miss, especially if tuned in one way or another.
Eur06 cars exhaust emissions are so clean they had to develop new machines to measure them, when e6 first came out in late 2014 we could not get any reading from the smoke machine, no matter what we did and nor could the test centre.

Ok but i dont know what tapley/bowmonk is. But can swedish brake tests harm the epg actuator?
They also test regular brakes in speed though they have only 2wd rollers to test with.

I remember watching an mot tester trying to test my old 4wd and every time he started the rollers it climbed out, after the forth time i got board and explained he needed to road test the vehicle and use the Tapley meter that was sitting on the bench.

Thanks for all answers. Im wondering if the swedish guys are making epb failure because of their test
procedure. Pulling the actuator in speed so the pads engage and strains the wire too much and puts stress on the gears inside. If the pads swing along a couple of mmm inside of the drum before it stops.
When i bought my defender in 2003 they told me not to hit the parkingbrake as a old volvo because the whole stuff will brake. Still they test my defender also in speed. Does not feel goodđś.

I think you will find if you apply the epb whilst in motion it also applies the footbrake circuit.

Correct. If you apply the parking brake above a slow crawl all the main service brakes operate, then the handbrake applies when stopped.
UK MOT testing requires the handbrake to be in bedding in mode before testing. Otherwise you will get an incorrect reading of the main brakes working.

I seeđ§. But how is bedding in mode applied?
Im supposed to take the squeaking epb apart and refit drum brakes and stuff so it maybe important.
Ive seen that adjustment is 60nm then loosen 10 âdotsâ on the adjustment so far but i gurss i have to read more when my parts arrive from uk

The Bedding in procedure
⢠You need to bed in the EPB shoes either when you have changed the EPB, shoes or you have
changed the rear discs.
⢠With the Engine running, press the brake pedal fully on and off 3 times. On the third press, hold the
brake pedal down.
⢠With the brake pedal still in the down position, pull the EPB switch upwards 4 times and then
downwards 3 times. This must be completed within 10 seconds.
⢠Your dash display will then show âPark Brake Bedding Cycle Activeâ or something similar. If it hasnât,
then release the brake pedal and try again.
⢠You need to ensure that you are on a clear piece of road or land as this procedure needs to be
completed 10 times.
⢠Drive at least 19mph and maximum of 29mph and then apply the EPB switch until you stop. You
then need to wait for 60 seconds or drive for 1 mile (to allow the brakes to cool down before
repeating the process. If you stop the engine or you drive over 30 MPH, the bedding in process will
be cancelled. At the end of the 10th time, the bedding in mode will automatically fi nish.
