Brake Problem - Second Opinion Required

Bow down Disco Forum!!!
Ive had perfect success with every post on this amazing forum, so hope you can help on this.. Smile

I drive 06' Disco 3 Automatic with 158k on clock.
A few weeks ago when on a rare long drive across Ireland, I noticed the brakes making a slight sloshy, liquid sound. Then periodically, when I try and come to a full stop, the brakes slow the vehicle right down to a crawl, but then doesnt fully stop the car. (at this point the brake pedal feels kinda 'grainy').
Somehow pumping the brakes a few times when in neutral, seemed to fix it.

It would happen intermittedly the last few weeks.
Today I brought it in to 'Fastfit' (who do tyres, brakes etc).
The guy had a quick look and said it might be a fluid flush that's required - due to air trapped.
He said the brakes look good otherwise

He said he could do a caliper flush which would cost €60.
However what may be required is a full flush (which he can not do)

He advised getting a second opinion.

Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance!!

Sounds like oil in the brake booster....

Thanks for the prompt response!

Scanning that it sounds like you could be right.

However, what may be confusing is that the recall is 10 years ago.
And this vehicle was serviced yearly for its first 10 years by Land Rover in Ireland*
Would they not capture that at service time?

I bought the vehicle used in 2016, so in 2010 it was with its original owner.

What do you think in this respect?

And In terms of my situation now, if I bring it to a land rover approved mechanic to repair (with your pdf you provided), will it be possible for Land Rover to cover the work as part of same?

Hope that makes sense.
And thanks again!

If you have 2 vacuum coming from the rear of the engine the mod was done.

LR did mine last month

Out of interest, Did you know about the recall and bring it to them voluntarily, or did you have an issue that made you bring it?

And were they able to fix it without charge?

Do you have any way to check if the CCPC have listed a recall , as the authorities in UK have done ?

I had an issue. But was aware of the recall.

Poor brakes after startup.
Oil in servo.

I let the dealer know there was recall.
Their computer was aware it wasn’t performed.

I guess dealers are happy to take money off LR in this climate to carry out work. I didn't have to pay

Thanks guys.
Really helpful
And good to know Pete

Where Im at now:
I called local LR approved mechanic and explained the following:

He told me (interestingly) that even when LR carry out yearly services on vehicles that have had the recall, they dont actually carry out the work unless there is oil present. Seemed strange

Anyway, Im gonna bring it to him to hvae a quick look;
He said he will be able to diagnose quickly
He was not sure if I will be able to get covered by warranty or not.

Its a 06D and I bought privately in 15'.

Any further thoughts welcomed.
Thanks.

For the recall they:

Add the 2 pipes
Change a spring in the vac pump.

Check for oil present in the servo. If there is they order in and change the servo. So that takes 2 days (or 1.5)

Great thanks Pete

Do you mind me asking if you were/are original owner of that vehicle?
And in what year you had that done.

(trying to work out whether ill be covered by recall / warranty)

Cheers

No I purchased it about the same time as you did. Had the fix done 1 month ago.
I just printed land rover p017 document. (PM me your address if you want me to send it to you).

I just went into the dealer, and said the brake servo wasn't working correctly. Had the print out in my hand of the recall procedure

They checked the registration number, agreed it hadn't been done, and asked when I wanted it doing?

All the D3's I have seen have had the modification done, but I can't say if there was a recall.

It could be JLR Ireland only did the mod as cars appeared in their dealer workshops. If there was no recall notification to owners it's very possible there are a lot of D3's out there without the modification having been done. If you check online you will see the recall was in place by JLR across many markets where models with the TDV6 was sold.
Take with you a copy of the recall notice posted above by kajtzu when the dealer is investigating the fault. In the meantime, get in touch with the CCPC and send them a copy of the same recall bulletin, as well as any intl evidence of same and see what they come back with.

https://www.ccpc.ie/consumers/

At least you will be forearmed to some extent should the dealer "baulk" at their responsibilities.

Yeah there have been reports of LR not honouring the recall
However that maybe in instances when the recall has already been done.
They were meant to keep doing it if the problem returned Laughing
