Front wheel bearing dead - will the other one be far behind?
Just in the process of replacing the offside front wheel bearing on the D3 after it died with a pained screech on the way to Tesco's. From other's experience should I be looking at doing the nearside bearing as well - I might not be so lucky with it dying around the corner from home next time?

My OSF died at 91k miles, the NSF lasted till 103k. Neither were dangerous failures. If you've time do both, you'll be safe for a while if you do.Richard

Changed the passenger side at about 87K. Drivers side still going strong at 106K. The drains on the roads around me really bash up the car on the nearside so it's not surprising that the bearing didn't last as long. (That said, the roads here are generally crap anyway so I don't think the offside will be too far behind).
Make sure you buy a decent quality hub.PAGODA

Just replace it when it dies. Your other one may go on to last a few years more.Kev

Thanks all.
Sounds like I got pretty much average (maybe a little low) on the OSF bearing - car's done 83k miles, been mine since around 60k. I've not checked the service history but it's probably safe to say they're the originals. I've got an SKF on order to replace the shagged one, will hold-off on the other for now but seeing as (CoVid-19 not withstanding) we tend to drive to the in-laws in Italy twice a year it's probably worth doing the other before we next set off, whenever that'll be - would be a pain to have to pay stealer prices if the other died halfway across Germany... Of course I could revert to my Defender days, carry a full toolkit(*) in the back and swap it by the side of the autobahn

If you've got a quiet moment, check the circumference of the bearing and then work out how many revolutions it will have made for the mileage you've done.2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

What's the circumference of the bearing got to do with it? Surely it's the rolling diameter of the tyre (to get the rolling circumference) that will give the number of revolutions of the bearing.Richard

I changed both my front ones at 70k miles. Noticed the brake pads were wearing more on one side when changing. When I checked the rim free play there was a good clunking noise. No warning, rumbling noises that were going to indicate failure. I fitted SKF hub and bearings.

I had my NSF wheel bearing go out last fall, replaced. Noticed I had a noise on decel and assumed it was the other wheel bearing. Long story short, I wound up replacing all 4 wheel bearings (and finally diff carrier bearings ). Noticed quite a bit of roughness in 2 of the bearings I'd replaced (that hadn't failed).
You might be fine for awhile yet, but expect you'll need to replace them soon.

I replaced front passenger side at about 110K miles and driver side at 117K miles. And just did front air struts since they had micro leaks and the amber light of the Suspension came on. Did it before it will burn out compressor.D3 2005 V8 SE Bonatti Grey "The Rhino" (our NYC D3)

My front driver bearing died at 274K km. I was noticing a knock going over slow bumps (figured a ball joint was on the way out). Also I noticed squeaking from that brake that was very much amplified going around corners. Since there was no bearing noise driving around I did not suspect the bearing. I jacked the wheel up to check the ball joint and noticed the whole wheel was very loose! Replaced with Timken bearing. All good since - at 320K km now and the other side still has not failed.
This was different to the failure mode of the rear bearing (same side) - that had no movement at all but was very loud at speed - to the point where I felt the bearing would've blown itself apart if I had driven much further. Was also very ratchety to turn the wheel off the ground.2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.
