Hi all,
I’m just about to install a replacement diesel v6, not for the first time I might add, and the turbo seems to have the tiniest amount of play, it was running fine on the original motor prior to loosing the cam belt tensioner. I have two turbos and both have similar amounts of play but both should be in usable condition. Any ideas please? I’m hoping to save some time and cost on what’s been a very expensive and slow rebuild, thanks in advance

Hi, first... as turbo’s use oil as a bearing component, they need play... and that is why they always need oil pressure
But second... what is tiny, impossible to say definitive without more data, but “tiny” does not sounds wrong TBH
On the other hand, looking at the work involved, to change it later... why not just, give them new cassettes
Like this one:

I used these from this firm before (no connection, just a customer) both on my 300bhp Saab Aero and on my D3 TDV6
Easy to do, saves a lot of money and good quality IMHO (although, the oldest i did, has only 35.000 KM on its clock now... The Netherlands are not a large country, tiny is a better word Best regards

put a syringe full of fresh engine oil into the oil feed, most if not all of the free play should go.
There should be no end float but a little up/down on the shaft is okay.
