rear brake calipers
Hi, noticed my offside rear wheel was red hot & smelling yesterday, stripped it all down and the problem is that the caliper piston has corroded under the rubber seal, causing the brake to not release the pressure on the pads. Made a temporary fix with some WD40 and a bit of pumping/pushing the piston.
Ordered a pair of new calipers last night.
Does anyone know the size of the copper crush washers for the banjo bolt connections for the brake lines ?

Whilst you are in there, it may be a good time to replace the flexi brake hoses. Just replaced all the calipers on mine and replaced the flexi brake hoses for Stainless Steel ones.

Thanks for the info.
I'm surprised the piston was sticking, as I have the service history and receipts for the car before I bought it and both rear calipers were replaced in Oct 2016, and it's only done around 25K miles since then.
Anyhow they're cheap enough, got a pair for £59 delivered, got them from the same Ebay seller I bought a pair for my Disco 2 rears from, they lasted over 4 years without any problems

The elcheapo calipers are actually pretty good, and at them prices are almost disposable.
You can reanneall the copper washers, heat them with blow torch until glowing, then drop into cold water.

Hi, yeah I mostly do anneal the copper sealing washers, but I always have a stock on hand just in case the originals are beyond saving or as sometimes people use an aluminium one, and they tend to get pretty chewed up.
I agree about the cheap calipers, the only problem is probably the poor quality of the piston plating, but I doubt even the more expensive ones use stainless pistons.
I'll strip & refurb the ones that are on now and keep them as a spare pair.
Thx

All done
One of them was completely seized, couldn't get the piston out even with compressed air, corrosion was pretty bad, so I just trashed them... for £28 each I figured it's not worth the hassle. A piston & seal kit is around £18 per side anyway.
Brakes work great now.2005 TDV6 SE Auto

I had the same problem on my rears, no way I was getting the pistons out without ruining the whole calliper. Shame as I wanted to refurb as an exercise and hopefully as spares after but nothing would release them!

The best way I have found is to use the brake system to push the pistons out, before detaching from the car, putting a block of wood in the gap so they don't totally pop out. One I remember I really had to stand on the pedal to get it to move.

I got it out in the end, the bore was all scored and damaged, and it was badly corroded, I just scrapped them.2005 TDV6 SE Auto
