D3 Smoking and Auto changing gear
Good evening all.
Having had my 09 written off I now have a 54 plate D3 TDV6 S Auto. I purchased this a few months ago and have had no issues as such until now.
On acceleration I have a lot of black smoke, like a black smoke screen and also the auto box can’t make its mind up which gear it wants to be in.
Today I have checked all the intercooler hoses and clamps, all hoses look okay having removed and cleaned them, replaced and tight as a drum. I did notice quite a lot of oil on the long hose outlet at the cooler and also the full length of the bottom of the cooler. Not dropping oil on the deck so I don’t think there is a leak in the inter cooler it’s self but just wondered if anyone has had similar. Using good fuel, not supermarket fuel so I don’t believe the fuel is the issue.
Also the auto box seems to want to change between 3rd and 4th all the time in general driving, when cruising on a journey it’s fine when up to speed but when driving locally it’s up and down like a yo-yo, I wondered if it’s the smoking issue which is causing the gearbox issue.
Should I get the gearbox flushed? It’s got a full history but I can not see any reference to gearbox oil change.
It’s on 160K so got some miles on the clock.
Engine oil, filter, air filter, fuel filter all done at purchase and MOT in Feb at 158K so that side of things are okay.
I fear if not gearbox oil it’s the torque converter but would that cause the engine smoke trail I’m leaving.
Any suggestions welcome. Thank you.

Brad,
Everyone one will tell you to get the codes read and then post here.
Gut feeling is EGR failure. Get them blanked - plenty on the Forum - do a search.

Check the intercooler carefully as you mention oil along the bottom, it has probably split along the bottom edge.Stu

Thanks Stu, I will remove tomorrow and have a good look. I’m assuming that if there is an issue in the intercooler system it will cause the kind of issues I have mentioned.
Cheers Brad

There's a dam good chance of that so sort the engine smoke first. It is almost certain to be a boost leak.Stu

If there is no leakage in the inlet trackt..
It is quite normal at 160K to have excessive turbo bearing wear.. this will cause blueish smoke and lag, Because the turbo is not spinning as it should... this can cause the autobox behaviour....
It also causes the oil in the intercooler (hoses)Best regards
Harold

Thank you Harold, it is black smoke and a fair bit which is heavy on acceleration, no lag as such just lots of smoke. There is however oil in the hoses and in the neck of the intercooler. Cheers Brad

I would check the actuator rod is moving freely on the turbo. When you turn the ignition off, listen for the electronic motor moving the arm back and forth.

Hi
Plus 1 what’s already been mentioned
Apologises if you’ve already checked something , may i plse add whilst checking the actuator rod , check the hose clips are tight and no splits in the hoses
There’s also another hose clip behind the passenger side wheel arch liner
Enclosed some pics when I done mine with new clamps and silicone hoses as well on the other side
also Have a quick check ur MAP sensor is clean
Hope that helps and plse keep us updated of how it goes
new intercooler blue silicone hoses and clamp
Clip hidden behind wheelarch Liner , LH side of picture
Closer picture of New T bolt clamp fitted
Zoomed out pic of the new hose clip fitted
Clips shown here I found broken causing a boost leak , managed to undo the clip and snake it around the hose without removing hose

Good afternoon folks.
Well I thought as it’s easy I’d check and clean the MAP sensor first as it’s an easy job.
Okay so pictures attached, it was pretty caked so given it a gentle clean and removed all the crud, the hole is now clear so replaced it connected and checked. Engine started and fine at tick over, gave it some throttle and didn’t seem to smoke but soon as you lift your foot off it stalls, tried to re start but won’t, removed key to reset and starts anything above 2000rpm and it stalls, tried to drive but stalls, leave on tick over for about 30 seconds and it stalls. Removed again to check I hadn’t done something wrong but all good, seal on the o ring is tight screwed back down plug is firmly connected so back in okay. Restated and same problem.
There is a bit of a “whooshing” sound as it stalls if that makes any sense.
I assume that I have a U/S MAP sensor now.
Suggestions on a postcard please..........

indeed, i have the same question...
poking IN the sensor hole will destroy it forever...
rather expensive part TBHBest regards

wasn’t a bad guess in suggesting to check the MAP sensor and indeed Plus 1 what the other guys have said ref how the hole was cleaned
around 2,000 revs and above the tube begins to spin , Hope the pics helped ref hose clamps as that whoosh could be a loose intercooler hose clamp near the turbo
Plus wouldn’t be a bad idea to rescan it to see what codes come up
Hope that helps

I didn’t poke in it as such just the first couple of mm with a cotton bud and brake cleaner, has an HDC fault showing on dash also.
Tried unplugging which seems to make it run okay but gearbox and suspension faults then come up obviously. Beginning to wish I’d not started this😩
