V8 VVT Questions - Please Help

Good Afternoon All

I have ongoing issues with one of the vat units on my 4.4 V8 Engine, it will need replacing but finding a garage to do the work a the moment is problematic.

I have the full rattle when at low Revs and as such know the unit has gone.

I have the ability to do it myself but not the time at the moment. So here are my questions if anyone can help.

Having now pulled the plugs on both solenoids to disable the VVT will I do any damage to the working unit when I plug it back in? From what I understand this will increase the MPG but not sure if it will damage anything.

Can I replace the VVT unit without stripping the entire timing chain? (and removal or fan, draining of radiator ect)

is there anything else this could be prior to spending hundreds in parts to do the full job.

Thanks in advance

Hi,I can't give you an answer but with the limited number of V8 Discos built you might be better asking on a Jag forum?

Thanks for your response, I have started looking around on those forums as well but as with most things the responses are mixed.

I have unplugged both and am going to drive it without the solenoids attached and put up with the engine light on, it has at least stopped the annoying rattle from the broken VVT unit.

Will get to it ASAP but with everything going on sourcing the full parts list may be an issue.

Thanks again

Hi, it's hard to find just the VVT solenoid on its own, but it looks like it's a 'Gates VVS167' and I've only been able to find them on US sites priced around $62, then there's postage.

Haven't been able to find it listed with the usual UK factors, but you could try shopping around. Looking at the LrCAT parts list, only the full VCT housings are listed i.e. LR023328, LR023329 and they cost an arm and a leg each.

If the right solenoids are VVS167 then they would be easier to replace, requiring only the rocker covers to be removed, to get at the screws holding them in place. The full VCT housing would require the front engine cover to come off and the radiator and the crank pulley and and and.

Thanks for your reply.

I have managed to source a new solenoid and replaced it and as such ruled that out.

It is without a doubt the VVT Unit.

Aah, then there's no easy way out, front cover to come off, so all ancillaries, belts, pulleys, etc. The with front cover off you'll need the special timing tools to remove the timing gear. while you're in there might as well fir new chain tensioners.

This is not for the faint hearted, believe me I know, been there done that to have the heads worked on some years ago.

Not sure how thing would be affected by disconnecting the solenoids.
