Bad alternator maybe
Good evening all.
Some weeks back, my 2007 disco 3 auto had the battery warning light come up on the dashboard, tested the voltage via multimeter and the hidden screen and she was well down. New alternator fitted and then comes the problems.
On cold start up, the revs are pulsating for approx 10 seconds or so, the centre display (sat nav ) flickers, and the radio volume also pulsates....
I thought it may be the alternator that's US, but its doing the same still.... Even with a second replacement alternator
I've checked the battery tonight, disconnected and left for several hours and she is reading 12.7v before starting, then once she fires up goes up to 15.3v
Coukd it be as simple as it needs to be a denso alternator or something else....... Once she has had this pulsating wobble, she goes back to normal and is faultless...... Until the next day.
Any advise would be appreciated
Cheers
Steve

Do you mean that you've tried two alternators, and neither of them is a genuine new Denso? If so, that's most likely the issue. Loads of threads on here and all say 'Denso' every time.Richard

I would be interested to hear if a Denso will resolve this issue. My D3 has done this for a while , fitting a new battery calmed it done but not totally eliminated the voltage pulsing on initial start up. Its a Land Rover exchange alternator.

Ive had the car for near on 1 year and she has never acted like it before, hence me thinking the only change point has been the Alternator change.

Hi, yes just got the alternator from local auto factors...... Thinking now to buy Denso and send the others back.
What makes Denso the better choice?

It was designed for the job, and made with quality components! Even a genuine Denso is not guaranteed for life, the Discovery is really heavy on the alternator.
I don't recall reading any post about a pattern alternator working for very long if at all.
I replaced mine with a genuine Denso, and re-built the old one with a new diode pack. I'll only use it for emergency though, gives me time to get another new genuine Denso. Richard

I think its pointing to swopping it over to Denso...…
would the wrong alternator cause these issues?

I'd be surprised if you could have a) fitted the wrong alternator b) got the wrong alternator to work at all.Richard

Denso
I had similar issues, new OEM... alternator, failed inside 4 weeks. Local LR replaces with Denso in under an hour, no issues since. Said he’s never had a Denso back he’s fitted...
