Sounds like a DUMP VALVE ! |
|
Hi Gang,
I have a little problem ! When I drive my D3, I've started getting a rush of air, similar to the sound of boy racers and the dump valves in their cars. It's gradually getting worse and mainly appears to happen the instant I take my foot off the accelerator.
I've wondered if its a turbo or inter cooler pipe or if there is something more technical.
I probably need to mention that when I start to accelerate, say on a motorway, she doesn't pull away as fast or hard as when I first got her. Also the fuel economy has dropped and when towing the caravan, it feels like there is a struggle going on somewhere.
I did have the Kam belts and tensioners replace 4 weeks back and it made no improvement at all. The problem has gradually got worse since last summer.
Any help will be gratefully received.
Andy

Hi MarkOne
There is very little smoke at all if any, and no oil usage, I'm pleased to say. Just a really really irritating whoosh of air when my foot comes off the accelerator. Do you have any ideas on which pipe it might be ? Is there a fault or reason the pipe may have failed or come off that you know of ?
Regards
Andy

Seen this before, twas a faulty turbo in the end...
However, start with the basics such as hoses, check the intercooler for leaks, check the EGRs are working OK, or blank them off My D3 Build Thread

I've got the same thing. As soon as you take your foot off the throttle there is a short wooshing sound.
There doesn't appear to be any loss of power at this point.
I have recently blanked both EGR's.
I'll look at the points raised by disco mickey and report back.

Could be the turbo on it's last legs but strange how its down on power, could be a cracked intercooler if you can't find a problem with the hoses get a look round it. Any major pipe coming off or splitting would normally result in it looking like its burning coal under boost.

not for the faint hearted........best get the experts to do it coz you'll need to follow manufacturers procedure for "priming" the new turbo when fitting or yer warranty will be olloxed.....so having got someone else to do it would give you some kind of audit trail
BTW have you got some dish saved up...not cheap to do LR part route as they have a huge surcharge but can be bought direct from authorised Borg Warner suppliers (BW is the manufacturer).
Here's the people who were willing to sell me direct on a "cash account" basis a year ago:

according to Borg Warner website, that's who maunfacturers the turbo, they have a title on their troubleshooting guide for "Turbocharger generates acoustic noise" but I cant get to see the solution....best send um an email or call um.

You just need to tick the box and the solution pops up underneath. The solutions are...
Dirty compressor or charge air cooler
Engine air collector cracked/missing or loose gaskets
Excessive flow resistance in exhaust system/ leakage upstream of turbine
Exhaust gas leakage between turbine outlet and exhaust pipe
Foreign body damage on compressor or turbine
Insufficient oil supply of turbocharger
Suction and pressure line distorted or leaking
Turbine housing/flap damaged
Turbocharger bearing damage You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

I have checked out the website suggested by Character.
The diagnosis points towards an air leak of some sort.
Since I have recently blanked the EGR's I am trying to recall if the noise happened after this.
I'm not 100% sure but a quick check of the various bolts would be a good place to start.
I realise that I have piggybacked this post a little but hopefully it will help out the original poster.

SWMBO had this exact same whooshing noise on her diesel Nissan micra after running into the back of someone at low speed. She had cracked one of the turbo intercooler pipes and it was that which was causing the noise on lifting off under acceleration. Club N.E.R.D's
