Failed propshaft centre bearing?
Hi,
My car has no discernible symptoms of ill health whilst driving. However when I was underneath it the other weekend I spotted this looking backwards from under the transfer case. There is definite perished rubber going on.
What exactly is this and is it expensive?

New prop time, 200 odd quid.
One guy on here repaired his centre bearing rubber with sikalfex and reckoned it lasted for ages with no issues

Anyone else tried Sikaflex?
I’ve got the same issue, Bodsy pointed out my rubber was just starting to perish, and had read about the guy using Sikaflex.
Had hoped to so if there’s more positive experience of it as a temporary fix.

No problems in quite a few years and 10s of thousands of miles.

Did you take the propshaft out to introduce the Sikaflex, and was it just in the area of the failed rubber and how much did you get cram in there?
Can you over do it?

Took out the residual rubber;
Used thinners to clean it up;
Put a soft rubber 1/4" screwdriver bit holder (one of the ones that holds 6 bits in a row) to hold it level then filled it (the gap, not the bearing!) with Sikaflex and waited 24hrs for it to cure.
I think when I first did it the props were rather more expensive than they're available for now.
Any signs of noise/notchy I'd replace the prop as c.£200 is maintenance money well spent.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

So you do back the entire bearing mount with the stuff then; obviously not the bearing.
Might be well worth thinking about, even as a spare if I do replace it.

I have recently changed my D3 prop. at 145K miles when the centre bearing rubber failed. When off, I found the rear UJ was failing , so well worth checking that as well.

Essentially, yes.
As said, it's worth checking there's nothing untoward with the rest of the prop as the replacement part is not unduly expensive.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Changed my rear diff due to failed rubber and rear cv starting to get stiff. Then found the front had failed it had lost its grease. So I would check both.
