Advice on component strength

Hello!

I'm new here but not new to landrovers. That said, I need help!

I have the option of a d3 as the base for a ultra 4 race car. The intention at this stage is to utilise the rolling chassis, 4.4 v8 and all the electronic goodness that comes with it.

I'm keen to know just how tough the standard diffs, drive shafts etc are? Are there tougher after market parts out there? I'm going out on a limb with this project and I'm hoping that the added benefit of an independent suspension set up with the terrain response on fox big long travel coilovers will give me the edge.

Eventually it will (if I get the news I hope for) be built up to be essentially a fully caged buggy type affair so there will certainly be a weight saving to be had although it will have to be running 37-40" tyres

My own d3 experience although my daily driver, doesn't extend to anything more than a quiet green laning afternoons occasionally and ive never broken anything.

Thanks in advance.

That's an interesting one for sure - let us know how you get on!

One thing that springs to mind is that rear E-diff models have heavy duty rear driveshafts due to the potential extra torque. Thumbs Up

I’d wager that the diffs would be fine, as would the propshaft, chassis and suspension. Front driveshafts can more fragile with torque and steering angle, so worth thinking about. You can hit the auto gearbox torque limit when engines are tuned though.

When driven very hard on very rough terrain I’ve managed to take the steering UJs beyond their limit, which has produced a few interesting moments. Whilst landing a D3 in true Dukes of Hazard style the steering went (again), the armoured windscreen departed and took most of the bonnet skin with it but everything else was fine. They are remarkably tough beasts, although you can sheer the glove compartment latches when really driven hard. It is also a bit of a surprise when the headlining comes down or a rear seat breaks free. Body mounts become a consumable part too. Embarassed
