Amber Warning: Water in Fuel
Ladies and gents, I've done some searching and reading and I wanted to consolidate what I think I've learned before I kill the car by making a mistake.
Amber 'Water in Fuel' warning came on this morning whilst out. I should:
- Drain the filter, but expect nothing to come out
- Clean the electrical connectors to see if that changes anything
- Replace the entire unit (housing + sensor + filter) for a few pennies more, but a lot less time, than doing it one by one
I have driven about 15 miles since the light came on and I need the car this weekend so expect to drive another 30 or so miles. The warning is amber so I'm taking it as advisory but safe to continue to use the vehicle subject to not doing anything excessive with it.
To the extent it matters the car is a 2012 D4 HSE with about 43k on the clock. Only had the damn thing serviced last week!
Advice very much welcomed.

Never had this on the Discovery, on my Defender all that was needed was to drain the fuel filter housing and let it fill up with fresh fuel, perhaps you could try this or maybe change the fuel filter , if it was serviced last week was the fuel filter changed? is it possible that somethings wrong here or something been dislodged on the wiring.

I'd have to check the credit card. Services was on 5/12 and the light came on today. I'm 99% sure we have filled up sometime in between but it was not today just before the light came on.

Had this happen on my 2011 D4, WIF warning would come on when driving in heavy rain. You can diagnose whether it is the filter housing if you disconnect the feed from the sensor, if you still have the warning then the wiring within the housing has broken down and it will need a new unit.

Confident that there was no water in the system I went straight back to the indy to have it replaced.
Filter came off and was drained but contained only diesel. Entire new unit went on which cost £60 inc the about a 30mins labour. This was discounted because I didn't require the filter it came with given that mine was less than 100miles old.
Happy that the car won't now enter limp mode over Xmas.
