brake pad wear rates

My motor has just cleared 28k miles from new, so as I was putting my winter alloys on this morning I thought I get some pads in hand so that if they needed changing I'd do it whilst the rims were off. I was surprised to see the front pads only about half worn but the rears down to about 3mm. I have changed the rears, left the fronts for now. Pretty sure both my D3's and previous D4 went through front pads quicker than rears.

Ah well

I would expect the fronts to wear out faster as they do upto 75% of the breaking.
 Jaguar I-Pace HSE imminent.
Gone HSE with Flappy Paddles. IID BT tool. RLD Spare Protector, Altox GPS.

Me too which is why I was surprised to see how worn the rears were.

Rears were changed first on mine at second service, not surprising when you see the size of them compared to the fronts. In fact the last three LR’s I’ve had, the rears were changed first.

Same here, always have to change the rears first.
The rear pads don’t work as hard but are much smaller so wear out quicker.
Just changed the rear pads on the D3 yesterday as they were down to 3mm.
The fronts fitted at the same time are only half worn.

Hmmn, on SWMBO's D4 the rear pads wear quicker than the front, whereas on my D3 it is the front pads which wear more quickly.

Rear pads do more braking On a D4, as the front brakes are much, much bigger than that on the D3 Thumbs Up

Makes sense and how I think about it I have Brembo’s on the front of the D3 so bigger discs and pads as well.

I've just done the 2nd all-round pad replacement at 60k miles. The rear LHS (the one without a wear sensor! Censored ) was to one to go on both occasions.

I also replaced the rear discs, but the front discs look to have enough life left to last till the next pad change - fingers x Whistle (first time round I replaced all 4 discs, but I reckon I was being overcautious for the front ones.)

Rear pad wear

My 2012 D4 now at 96k and about to have 4th set of rear pads. My experience is about 25k for rears and 35k for fronts on mix of rural A and B roads. As others have said rears much smaller than fronts on D4. Wear sensor useless as it's always near side rear which is worst and sensor on offside!

Ive done 22k in my D4 since i bought it and dont think the oads were recently changed when i got it. Rears are around half worn. Still planning to replace in next 3 months though as discs will need changing soonish.

My 2015 is in for its second service today, having done 25k. The dealer has just said my rear pads need doing... to be honest, I thought it was a usual dealer need-to-charge-for-something, but having read this, maybe it is a genuine requirement. ho-hum.....

Changed my rears at the second service, fronts not done till the third service. It’s not a difficult job to do on a Sunday morning.
