Dangerous tyre wear!
Just got back from hols, 1000 miles in two weeks towing a 1.8 ton single axle
caravan with 4 adults, I removed and checked the tyres before I set off, cleaned and adjusted rear brake shoes and measured tread depth (minimum 3mm, even across tyres) and checked pressure (46psi in rears), I have a new set ready to fit for winter and was considering fitting them.
Yesterday I had the new tyres fitted and was shocked to find the wear/damage on the rear tyres, this is on the inner shoulder almost on the wall of both rear tyres, what can cause tyres to wear like this?- there is no play in the bearings no excessive movement in the bushes, car drives and handles very good, no bumps or noise from rear.

That’s shocking
I used to get this on a Mondeo at the front, but from too much torque.
I would suggest over inflation, 46 sounds too high, or from alignment, or perhaps too much nose weight on the tin tent?Sill protection - LED internal lights - LED reverse lights - boot liner - Dog Guard - Rock sliders

I have been running at 46psi in the rears for months if not years and there was no sign of any damage or scrubbing before I set off, caravan loaded same as always. Damage is only on inside shoulder almost as if tyres have been rubbing on something.It can when others can't,

That is not over inflation as that would be wear in the middle. I would say get tracking/alignment done and also get bushes and arms checked.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

I'm guessing if as you say nothing is worn that 4 wheel tracking will throw up a few red symbols. In particular I had rear camber out and it did that. Hunter 4 wheel tracking would be where I'd start.

The only time I have seen that type of wear pattern has been when tracking inordinately out

I'd say it's a combination of too much negative rear camber and too much weight on them too.
If you've too much nose weight on the caravan and a loaded Disco, there'll be alot of weight on the back end, but the air bags will still level the vehicle combination off so it looks fine, whereas if it was coil sprung, you'd be able to see immediately that there was a problem
I'd look into your alignment, and check your nose weights

Is the wear round the whole circumference of the tyre, or just half/part of it?

I check lots and lots of tyres and can say when they hit 3/4mm they are on their last legs and its very very rare for them to wear even across the entire surface with such low tread remaining, so if you had 3mm even then it must be something to do with the load you were carrying which caused the tyres to run at an awkward angle which a tyre with decent tread would just shrug off but on 3mm was its death sentence.

Yes, almost as if they have been rubbing on something, which was my first thought, they where removed and checked one week before the journey, wear was even across the tread at around 3mm.It can when others can't,

I had strange wear on one rear tyre where it was less than half the circumference that was 'grooved' and the first I knew about it was a flat tyre one morning.
Was very surprised to see the strange wear and the tyre fitter could only think it was a fault in the tyre carcass. Rear suspension arms atc were not very old and recent 4-wheel-alignment.
