I fancy wiring in a permanent rechargeable torch in the upper glove box. Power would appear best from the front fuse box and unused socket. Has anyone done anything similar and can recommend a suitable torch?

Nope, aint done it.
But, I'm thinking on buying one of these 'wind up' torches.
black n silver and seen them in BP stations at £6 each.
This one also recharges your mobile.
They seem half decent quality!
Will be handy to keep in glove box and also when out treking. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I've been toying with the idea of one of these:-
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LED-Lenser-Automot...B000PL3QMS
They had some at TBR the other day (at £20 or £30 though... )
I think it woiuld be just the job & save you having to put another wire in. Bodsys Brake Bible

Maybe just buy a decent enough size of inverter and you could just about charge anything you like BCP ?

Well I never.
I knew I had an Irish Father-in-law.
Bet my cousin is smarter than I and given up. I've probably tripled up since those days. Did you think I would leave you crying,

I just got this one today. Very well made, fits perfectly into the cigarette lighter socket. It also has an adapter for larger sockets (the socket on the back of center console is larger and will require the use of that adapter)

it's a nice little accessory. certainly not something to take into the woods at night though
From 3 feet away it produces a circle about a foot in diameter, bluish color. When the socket is powered, the lens glows in dim blue.
