Noisy tappets
Think I have a noisy tappet.
There is a light tapping noise from the top of the engine that increases directly with increased rev's.
I have taken it to a local independant and he agrees it sounds like a tappet noise.
I know they are hydraulic tappets, so how would i know which is the failed tappet after strip down, looks like injectors need to be removed so engine wont run. Will there be obvious damage/wear.
Any help or advice greatfully recieved.
Andi.

Strip and inspect. Id say a good clean make sure all the oil holes ar spotless. Replace any bad ones, but i wouldnt do all unless they pittance and these things rarely are.

Many thanks for the replies
They are about £21 each, its just looks like a big job to get to.
I suppose the next question is what would happen if I just left it to tap away ? On 190,000 miles now.

At 190k miles and noisey tapperts I would be more concerned with wear on the chain that drives them, if that fails the engine has shot it It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Had chain go, big noise was defiantly going to get rid. But,
Heads off, new valves all round, new chains, couple of busted tappets changed, (obviously should have changed all) was all good

My D3 was deffo sounding more and more tappet rattly before it gave up fully.
And the D4 sounds bad on Tesco/supermarket diesel, now just going to use BP or Esso juice.

Wonder if it was the cam chain that was rattling on yours DSL.

Mine is just a single tap Tap Tap then taptaptap when revved a bit.
Dont know if it would do any harm by leaving it.
