Key Refurbishment

All the rubber around the buttons on my key fob has disintegrated (although it still works fine).

Can any one recommend a reasonably price refurbishment company, there are lots advertising on ebay between £40 - £50 which seems like quite a let to me.

are you reasonable "handy" at DIY

look here
https://www.amazon.co.uk/BUTTON-REMOTE-RAN...ISCO3+keys
quite a simple process to split the existing case....transfer the innards & re glue
about 15mins work & a tube of araldite rapid (stay clear of Super-Glue)
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

I wonder if they are as good as the originals and as waterproof?

Mine still looks like new, probably not waterproof because I just used a few blobs of superglue to hold the case together. But, I have no intention of going swimming with my keys on me anyway Laughing

Only my opinion...

I closely examined the old original key moulding & the new one ..... The actual construction Is just the same plastic injection mould wise.
The new isn't a flimsy low cost copy...it looks & feels just the same.
The actual joint is glued as opposed to ultrasonic welded.
If you are careful with your Araldite...& get a bead on all the jointing edges I would say is waterproof

Just be cautious as regards the key blade return spring tensio - just one part turn

I use Araldite as it takes 3-4 mins to set.....in that time you have chance to get the two halves together & wipe any exces glue away
 BREXIT - done properly.

Just did mine yesterday Very Happy £3 for a case and blank key from the bay. Take your time splitting the original case so as not to damage the internals but should only take 10 mins with a couple of flat blade screwdrivers and some long-nose pliers. Had to fettle the end of my key a bit to fit into the rotating housing but only took 5 mins with a smooth file until it located correctly and was held securely by the roll pin. Despite some adverts stating the two halves don't ," snap", shut, and need to be held together with tape etc. after glueing, this one did snap shut, which made life very easy. A light smear of Araldite Rapide. Snap close and in the morning I had a brand new looking key/remote. Ordered another today to do the other one, well worth it IMO Thumbs Up

Ok JakeBoy....

You key case you bought must have been different than mine.....
The actual key metal bit didn't need to be swapped over removing the roll pin
The chunky metal knuckle thing that swivels was just the same....so swapped one for one
The plastic case on the one I bought from Amazon I think was identical as regards the shape inside / outside the mouldings.
The printed circuit board fitted exactly...
But this case had to be glued...it did "click" but not enough to hold up in normal use
 BREXIT - done properly.

I would say, "Yes"
I bought two from eBay and replaced mine in about 20 mins for the pair, easy to follow instructions and for a non-techno bloke like me, easy to do and certainly good value and quality compared to OEM replacements

Is the circuit board glued to the base or does it just fall out then you open it?

I am a bit worried about breaking it but will give it a go!

you won't break the PCB
its just loose laid in the case
when its out you can use the buttons & see the battery

to swap this isn't hard at all...you've just got to be wary with splitting the case
a sharp knife around "join" bit by bit & dont insert anything into the case & attempt to lever
insert anything & you could damage the PCB
 BREXIT - done properly.
