Brembo 4 pot caliper helicoil repair
Upon removal of my Brembo Caliper this evening, the top bolt striped out the threads from the caliper so there aren't any threads left to put the bolt back into. Not sure how that happened
Has anyone got a spare passenger side Brembo caliper knocking about, or know of a set for sale?
Thanks
John

I assume the brembo calipers are aluminium alloy ? If that's the case surely you could helicoil the threads ? They would then be stronger than just a plain thread in aluminium anyway then. Cheap and easy fix. Jarrod

Yes they are an alloy body. Are helicoils really that strong to hold the caliper to the hub?
Hmm I need to investigate a little more, as this would be a much cheaper alternative.

It's standard practice in industry that any aluminium components are helicoiled for strength. Pretty much everything in aerospace that was Ali alloy had helicoils in it. a steel thread of a larger diameter is always going to be vastly superior to a plain aluminium thread anyway. I'm sure some of the guru's will be on shortly to confirm it. Helicoil kits are fairly cheap but they do take a little bit of practice to get right. Jarrod

I've been reading up on helicoil'ing and you're right. This is something I didn't know. So I think I'm going to have a go, but it's a rather large bolt, M16 1.5 pitch. The kits are a lot cheaper than buying a new caliper. I've got nothing to lose at having a go.

M16x1.5 is a standard thread so you will have no trouble getting a kit I wouldn't have thought. I'm just flabbergasted that someone like brembo wouldn't use them as standard. Very strange especially for something like a brake caliper.
Good luck with it and please let us know how you get on. Jarrod

My Helicoil kit arrive yesterday, so I have fixed my issue.
This is what I started with....

I then drilled a 16mm hole, then reamed it out to 16.4mm and tapped the thread using the tap in the M16 1.5 kit.

I then installed the Helicoil.

The caliper bolts torqued up nicely, so all is well on the front brakes now.

Top bananas I'd love a set of brembo brakes on mine.Jarrod

I had to do the same on mine when I fitted my Brembo's, most thing's now and especially aluminum threaded holes are done this way, its much stronger and an easy fix when the threads get damaged.

It is quite shocking that they were not done when manufactured. Especially someone with such a big name. Jarrod
