How to work out what was fitted before?
Hi everyone, its a little intimidating for me to post here. My question might be a rather stupid one!
So i've just posted about the Discovery 3 that i've just purchased. its the 2005 SE model here in Ireland (not sure what the equivalent is in the UK)
She has an aftermarket stereo fitted and its working just fine. It has bluetooth and its all working great.
However the screen up on top is totally blank and the steering wheel controls don't control any of the stereo functions.
I have read countless threads about what is and what isn't possible and i'm feeling very confused.
I understand there is a difference between what is possible depending upon which headunit was fitted originally (single cd vs 6 cd)
My trouble is, i don't know what i had originally and I also don't know what options i'm missing out on!
I don't know if the 4x4 info was there before, or if the sat nav was installed, etc, etc.
I've seen some of the excellent threads by wiggs and the fault finding/ccf editing gadget but they won't be much use to me if i don't have the head unit installed?
Does anybody know how i could find out which one i had fitted? Is there anywhere i can enter the chassis number and figure out what the full spec of the car was?
Anybody been in my position? if so, how did you go about it?
Welcome to the forum Conner. I would guess being HS spec that it would have had a screen fitted. It can be retro fitted and enabled. You will find lots of info on here about it. Someone a little more qualified than me will see you straight

If you have a DVD under the passenger seat you would of had optional Nav.
The clue is in the statement , aftermarket, I would hazard a guess that it's not one that is connected to the wheel controls or the fibre optic network Altox GSM FBH controller thread

As you said it was an SE and you have a screen fitted to the top part of dash then yes originally you would have had a sat nav fitted my guess is either it went wrong and the owner just changed it as to expensive to replace or he wanted a few extra features with a different head unit therefore canceling all the original controls/screen fitted Discovery 3 se gone

Conor,
If it has the screen but an aftermarket stereo, another possibility is that the CD player gave up on the HK headunit (known to happen), maybe try to get your hands on a second hand head unit and plug it in. I know that I had to change the head unit in mine as it was not playing CDs and it was just plug and play - no codes.
Good luck with new Disco.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I've managed to figure out that there was single cd radio fitted to her but it developed faults and they chucked it.
I've seen other posts that suggest you could install it again somewhere else in the vehicle and get the sat nav and 4x4 info operational again. Is it worth the effort ?

Make sure you have the DVD under the seat before you go thinking you will restore nav !
It was an option

Hi. I doubt if your discovery had a single CD player if the sat nav screen was fitted first day. As far as I know the sat nav screen was only fitted with the 6 CD unit and doesn't work with the single CD unit. I am hopeful that someone will prove me wrong as I only have the single CD player and would like to fit the screen but everything I've read here says it is not an option.

What I thought as well. Raises the question, is the screen original factory fit or aftermarket? Pic would clarify that.

Remember an SE in Ireland is the equiv of a UK S, but should have a 6 shot CD in that case.
But as I understand it if the car has a 6 shot CD player it's not an option to fit aftermarket hifi, if it's a single it's easy. Which is why I was wondering if it is a genuine screen.
