What are the D3's like to work on? There are loads and loads of posts on here about people doing their own maintenance etc, but that doesn't tell me what skill level they are at mechanically. I mean I'm no Edd China (of Wheeler dealers fame), but will have a go at most things, I used to DIY on my 300tdi, but things have moved on since then......

Hi Dan.
If you have the time and are reasonably competant, I don't see why you can't handle much of the
work on a D3/4 yourself providing that you get a code reader so that you can converse with the car.
The mechanical side, apart from access, is not too daunting and the many "to do's" on here are a great help.
The reason I mention time is that you will invariably break clips or find that you need more parts so if you can live with the truck being off the road for a few days, then self spannering shouldn't be an issue.

Invest in the 3 tonne axel stands & jack from Machine Mart and off you go....
My best tip is to have your Weetabix for breakfast, everything is so damn heavy!

Apart from a gearbox flush by Disco Mikey, I have managed reasonably easily to keep both mine serviced and repaired for the last four years or so including belts etc on one, alternator replacement just a few days ago in the field and I didn't have a 13mm ratchet with me wished I had had. V8 upgrade on brakes several caliper and pad and pipe replacements they really do seem a weak point for such a safety item. All oils, auto box pivot recently, Luckily I haven't yet had and don't want turbo problems, my coiler is getting to the stage of needing suspension work and certainly needs a lift which I will tackle, same on the SE but it's bushes were new when I bought it though I just clocked up 40,000 miles since then so somewhere down the line I will be tackling it to. Go for it I would like to add thanks to the sponsors and contributors on here who make ownership and working on them so much easier by write ups and making spares available easily and by being so friendly in the process.

I second the comment about being able to leave the car off the road for a couple of days if you get stuck or need a part. Advanced Factors sponsor should be in the favourites of you search engine. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.
