Slow to start
Hi People, long time no speak Lol...….mainly as our D3 has been behaving itself!
So, wifey put 15.00 worth of unleaded in the tank (which was near empty) by mistake, rang me in a blind panic so I went out to her and filled it to the brim with diesel......all seemed fine.
Now, 3 months down the line we have a starting issue...….sort of. From cold first thing in the morning it has started showing signs of cranking over longer than normal before firing in to life.
Took it to my local independent who said they have seen it before if unleaded is put in the tank as filter can collapse.
Had fuel filter, pollen filter and oil filter all changed. It seemed better for a couple of days now its back to taking a while, (roughly 3 or 4 seconds of continuos cranking) before it fires. When it starts there is no smoke, no over fuelling, no nasty noises and it does not burn oil...….just runs as normal.

hi
Mine slowed over the last year as well. LR specialist mentioned it may be due to a few glow plugs failing. I cured mine by just waiting a few seconds for the dash lights to go out before cranking. Its perfect if I do that. A lot easier and cheaper than finding and replacing the plugs that are dying.
Hope this helps.

Try putting ignition lights on, wait for the glow plug light to go off then switch off then switch lights back on and wait for glow light to go out then start the car. See if it makes any difference also once it’s warmed up a bit does it start ok ?Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes, pads, callipers, flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

A couple of years back, when the frost started coming it would not start at all on the key, even after several pre heats. It went in to the local indy and was found to have 6 out of 6 glow plugs not working, after several days of trying they could only get 3 out, 1, 5 , 7 were replaced.
I was told by them that it should start fine on 3, but it wouldn't if the temp dropped below -1.
last year, suspecting we would have the same issue in the cold I put some injector cleaner through and it started all winter no problem with 2 pre heat cycles before cranking.
This starting issue is different, in that no amount of preheating seems to make it better, when it does start there is no smoke from the exhaust, just runs clean.
Once it has been started, its fine to turn it off and it will strt on the button, until its been left for a few hours.
have been told that the glow plugs only really come into play in severe cold conditions, not 15 degrees lol.

Don’t forget that the symptoms of knackered glow plugs is very similar to knackered injectors. My starting was transformed when a set of new(ish) injectors were fitted. Fault codes and injector balance figs would be a good place to start.

Try and get a read out of the injector values when warmMetal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)

Mines been slow to crank from cold. In a similar way. But switched the battery over to one Audi claimed was dead and problem went away!

UPDATE
So took it to a friend who has worked on LR products for years, he has a decent diagnostics set up and we could see there were oodles of fault codes, bit surprised the local indy didn't remove them when they had it two weeks back. I also paid for a new air filter, which hadn't been changed either
We removed all the fault codes, some were relevant to MAP sensor, he had a spare one on the shelf so we fitted it and the car is noticeably more responsive on the throttle, its felt a bit laggy lately.
The injector values showed that the pattern on no3 and no5 are a bit adrift of where they should be so am going to run a cleaner through the system next week and see what happens there.
Am rather hoping that the MAP sensor may be at fault, find out in the morning!www.jetskicentre.co.uk
