Defender 18 inch alloys on a D4

It would appear to be a success, I've not tried the rear yet but perhaps I ought to before buying tyres. There isn't alot of clearance for the front caliper cooling fins, Brembo Give 3mm as the minimum recommended gap, I'll try to measure it but I can get some thick card or the end of a screwdriver behind them.

If the front fits is it safe to assume the rear will too?

These are listed as an accessory for the 130 which is rated heavier than a D4 so I have no concerns there.

Good luck

Don't forget to advise your insurers.

I'm not sure why that advice keeps cropping up, one would hope no one is stupid enough not to advise their insurance.

Tints, snorkel and side bars are declared as are the current H rated tyres. Will be swapping to 255/60/18 V rated Michelin Latitude Cross and insurance will of course be advised of the wheel change.

Esure have been very easy to deal with on that front surprisingly so all good there.

I think I'll put all four on and will lower it to the ground just to be certain. It doesn't look like anyone else has tried to run these, maybe there's a reason or maybe I'm just the first that's posted about it.

Why are you going to 18s and why that tyre?

Not a fan of the Davnatis that I currently have on the car, haven't been able to get them balanced properly and having done only one green laning trip the black outer has worn through on a number of spots, also have a couple of bubbles on the sidewall.

I had 18's with that Michelin tyre on my D3 which rode much nicer, were plenty for what limited play time I have with the car and we're much nicer than the Davantis on the road. They don't do them in 19's and I was finding it harder to find a mild A/T in a 19.

Plus, sometimes it's just nice to try something different to everyone else. Plan B might be defender steels or sticking with 19's but these were a decent enough price to be worth a go.

It is a success, only moved it to settle the suspension haven't been able to cause any rubbing. Maybe on an incline or curb or something or might but in any case I'm having 255/60R18's fitted Thursday. From moving it briefly it feels lazy with the bigger tyres, the extra height might be nice but ultimately the cons outweigh the pros for me.

There is at a guess 2mm of clearance between the calipers and the inner of the alloy, would be interested to hear how that compares to the Evo and Compomotives. And the defender steels if anyone happens to see this.

All in all very happy so far. A significantly cheaper way to go for 18's without having steels or spending a fortune.

its early for my brain but i cant help thinking that as your brake pads wear the clearance will change all though im not sure the gap will increase or decrease so might be worth checking how much pad you have at the moment and checking as the pads wear out

personally i think i would not be happy with a 2mm gap between my calliper and wheel but that's just my opinion
 please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick,thankyou

I'm in the opposite camp as they are at the end of thier life so will be replaced at some point. Plenty of space to the spokes , the tight clearance is to the inner diameter which I don't think will make any difference. If it does I'll get some steels. It's the cooling fins that are close, I know some have ground them down but that's not something I intend to do.

My experiment is in no way an endorsement of them fitting for everyone , I'm happy with where I am at the moment though.

Had a change of heart, having driven it to work it's really nice on these tyres, they have some life left in them so am going to run them for a while and will see how it goes.

Huge improvement over the Davanti Terratoura that I had on before, despite a couple of attempts they were still out of balance and didn't ride at all nicely.

And yes, my insurance are aware of the tyres being over sized.

If you want cheap wheels and tyres, the steel take offs from the Defender go really cheap. Most tyres are unused.

May have to take that back, it does rub on full lock so I probably should look at some smaller tyres.

The big concern for me is if it drops to the bump stops but I might have ignored that if it didn't rub.

Those wheels look very nice, indeed. I do prefer simple spoke designs to the overly fussy ones that seem to have become the norm.
