EGR Question

Just a question for the technical bods and to answer my own curiosity really. Question

When an EGR Valve problem arises it is normally stuck open and causes lack of power below 2K rpm. Above that the Discovery is drivable and if Command Shift is used to keep the revs up it will get you home.

So the question is:

Why is there no power below 2k rpm??

Is the engine choking on the exhaust gasses?

Is the electronics shutting the car down until it gets to a rpm when the valve would normally be open?

Or is there another reason?

I suspect it isn't the car shutting down or blanking wouldn't work? My money is on chocking on its own crap!!

Over to the experts........... Wink

No its the electronics putting the car in to safe mode, because it knows there is a fault. It just restricts power level below a certain rpm.

So when you blank the EGR's why does the car not continue to shut down as the EGR is still physically jammed open? The car does not know the exhaust gas route is blocked off?

What is the car measuring to determine a jammed open ERG?

My theory, is when it's stuck open, it's letting an unmeasured amount of exhaust air into the air intake (not sensed at the MAF), and means it is the wrong mix of air/fuel, so less power until the turbo kicks in and then the quantity of air/fuel is forced in and the difference is less noticeable.

When it's stuck closed, it knows the fresh air coming in by the maf.

Can the MAF tell the difference between fresh air and mixed air exhaust? I thought the MAF was downstream of the EGR input pipes (hence why it gets so clogged up) so it would just measure mass air flow whatever that may consist of.

Would a stuck open EGR valve make the car shut the butterfly valve in the air intake by mistake? Is that why we remove it during blanking?

When the valve sticks, the air is free to bypass the engine and flow straight out to the exhaust, so boost pressure is lost. Limp mode would be triggered by the MAP sensor reading a lower pressure than expected, as opposed to the valve sticking itself, hence blanked EGRs don't continue to cause issues. Thumbs Up

EGR blanking

Hi,

I just blanked my EGR's as the IID BT showed a low circuit sensor A.

Question is, while reading the IID manual it mentions ECU update for EGR blanks, anyone know if this is necessary?

I haven't started the car yet as the compressor is off waiting for a re-build kit to arrive today.

Thanks
Stu

Later cars will show the MIL unless you do an EGR bypass update or fit emulators. You shouldn't need this in a 2006 car. Thumbs Up

EGR blanked

Well, had the first drive yesterday after blanking them, seems to pick up better, chucked out a fair amount of smoke the first half mile. But then all seemed fine. I think the MPG also seems to be 1-2 better but maybe too early to say.

Still got the fault showing on the IID but I assume that is because they are now disconnected. Or logged as failed.
